The last century saw the professionalization of sports. The 2008 Tour de France raises the question of whether this century will witness the criminalization of professional athletes. As the Tour nears the finish in Paris on July 27, the peloton is minus three riders who tested positive plus the whole Saunier-Duval team, which withdrew after one of its star riders was among the three alleged dopers. All this bodes ill for the upcoming Beijing Olympics, where doping is certain to be an issue.
