Not since Jacqueline Kennedy’s time in Camelot has a First Lady developed such a fashion following in the U.S. Consider the increased shipments at a shoe factory in China following a mistaken Dec. 30, 2008 posting on the fashion Web site coolspotters.com—one in which a fashionista reported a sighting of Michelle O wearing what she ID’d as Bandolino Berry pumps from New York City-based Jones Apparel Group. Never mind that the First Lady has never actually worn that shoe, according to the White House. The buzz may have been enough. Roeblan, the Chinese company that makes the Berry, says that in the first four months of this year, shipments to the U. S. were up 50% compared with a year earlier, to 268,000 pairs—at a time when Chinese exports overall fell about 20%.
