Ford’s new Fiesta compact has helped the company boost its market share in Europe to 8.1% in August, the highest in more than a decade. But will the spiffy redesign also be a hit in the U.S. when it goes on sale next year?
Speaking to a small group of reporters at the Frankfurt Auto Show, Ford execs said they’re encouraged by the response from about 100 U.S. consumers who have been driving the Fiesta five-door on a test basis. “We feel extremely confident that we have a compelling package,” said Jim Farley, Ford group vice president of global marketing.
The Fiesta will be a test of whether U.S. drivers are ready for higher-end small cars. Farley wouldn’t disclose a price for the Fiesta, but said Ford hopes that buyers will be enticed to buy one of several option packages rather than simply the base model. (As part of an overall push to reduce complexity, Ford is selling options as part of a few packages such as “sport” or “luxury,” rather than letting consumer pick from a checklist of extras.)
Ford is also trying to teach dealers to treat the Fiesta as a premium car, not just a commodity vehicle whose main appeal is the price. Said Ford CFO Lewis Booth, “We expect the same success in the U.S. as in Europe.”
We should all remember CFO Lewis Booth`s prediction.
Ford soon will be Ford again. Having lost Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover,Think, Volvo on their way - with horrendous losses for the share holders.
There is no more to sell.
Last month in the UK Ford lost their No1 selling spot to Hyundai - despite their new Fiesta.
Lewis - dream on.
Didn't Ford come out with the Fiesta in the 80's? In fact, I know they did I just saw on on the LA freeway a couple days ago.
Amazing American car companies don't look to the future.
Socalragamuffin, are you serious? Do you think it's the same car? If you took the time to learn anything about the new Fiesta you would know it is nothing like it's predecessors. It is as similar to them as the new Corvette is to the Corvettes of the 80's-- cars we'd all like to pretend didn't happen. You may like it, you may not, but Good God, do you post just to post?
That was the Festiva (a rebadged Kia that looked like a Yugo) - not the Fiesta. Jay Leno famously put a high power SHO engine in his and called it the SHOgun.....
"Ford is selling options as part of a few packages such as “sport” or “luxury,”..."
How is this different from trim levels?
Mini Coopers sell well enough at $20k plus, so the trick will be selling a loaded leather-and-satnav Fiesta at that price point with a bare-bones crank window and plastic hubcap specimen sitting next to it wearing a $13k price.
Detroit used to do this with big cars- an LTD and a Custom 300 were the same car except for "luxury" and "sport" features- but the business model at the dealer level has always been to try and sell the small-car seeker with money into something bigger.
@Socalragamuffin; The original Fiesta was offered in the U.S. from 1978-80. The fact that it was imported from Germany and the weak dollar killed it here, but there's been a continuous line of Fiestas in Europe ever since.
@Karlheinz comment "Last month in the UK Ford lost their No1 selling spot to Hyundai - despite their new Fiesta"

I've put $10,300 into a 15-year-old Escort the last two years, restoring it...Everybody trashed theirs except me. It runs and handles like a sports car. Original auto trans performs as well as a 2011 Lexus. Ford small cars are fun to drive and dead reliable...Yes, I had to put money in it at 205,000 miles!
ford your cars look like a hit for 2010 keep up the good work
Ford Fiesta.
If I remember correctly, the Fiesta came out 1st back in the early 80's. It was replaced with the Festiva.
Thanks for pointing out that Ford sold the Fiesta in the U.S. during the 1980s. I know that's true because I owned one. In 1981, which I believe was the last year Ford sold the Fiesta in the states, dealers were trying to clear them off the lots and I got one for no money down, just a monthly payment. That was convenient because at the time I had a job offer on the other side of the country but no cash. So I bought the Fiesta and drove it west. But to be honest it wasn't a very good car. It had a lot of mechanical problems and wasn't made for long-distance U.S. driving. The new Fiesta is a completely different and much better car.
I bought ford windstar space bus 2001
model but it was given me serious problem.Recently the brain box of it was
spoiled i have to spend about #140,000 Nigeria note to fix the car. Also we dont have Mechanic for this product like Toyota and Honda. Please what are you doing to make the product friendly to the users especially in Nigeria.I personally like the product but try as much as possible to reduce fuel consumpution at least for the average man within our locality, if you can achieve this, Ford will occupy the largest market in Nigeria particularly Lagos where i am residing.Thaks God bless
