Just when you thought Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary’s money-making schemes couldn’t get any wackier (or more irritating).
On Feb. 27, O’Leary told the BBC that Ryanair was considering charging passengers to use the toilet in flight. O’Leary says the airline has looked at the idea before and is investigating it once again. “We’re thinking of putting a coin slot on the toilet so people may have to spend a pound to spend a penny,” O’Leary told the BBC Breakfast show.
I just received the following from Ryanair’s head of media relations Stephen McNamara:
“Michael makes a lot of this stuff up as he goes along and while this has been discussed internally there are no immediate plans to introduce it. However, this highlights Ryanair’s continuing obsession with lowering costs and passing these savings on in the form of lower fares, which currently average just €34. Ancillary revenues, all of which are avoidable, help to reduce the cost of flying Ryanair and passengers using train and bus stations are already accustomed to paying to use the toilet so why not on airplanes? Not everyone uses the toilet on board one of our flights but those that do could help to reduce airfares for all passengers. Then again, maybe O’Leary was just taking the p*ss this morning.”
Stay tuned…
I think Ryanair is going a bit overboard with trying to keep prices low. Obviously, you want a low fare, but you do want to feel comfortable and not scrambling for change. Interesting story.
Michael O’Leary is a loony
If your neighbor jumped off a bridge, would you do it too!@?!@?
Once again, an airline shows its willingness to treat its customers like whores for cash. A reminder that prisoners get free toilet access probably doesn't mean anything to them.
I say pee in cups during the flight and spill them over after the plane has landed. Let their employees clean up the mess.
Where will it end? I ask this question in my piece "Ryanair Charges Passengers for Barf Bags" at www.suekatz.com
Wow - talk about worst ideas of all time! Learn from others' experiences: US Airways has recently rescinded their charging for water on their flights. Of course, different cultures = different sensibilities. Maybe in Europe, but not in the U.S.
I think if I had the misfortune to actually ride Ryanair, and was forced to pay to pizz, I'd instead pizz on the floor, either in the actual bathroom or at my seat.
Once the airline has several passengers per flight do the same, maybe they will take their pizz poor customer service attitude and shove it up their proverbial azzes.
Just sayin'
Ryanair managed to make front page news 7 days in a row last week in UK or Ireland, and while this is the item people remember now (I'm surprised how far it spread), the only real story was their plans to eliminate checkin desks at the airport.
Of course they are not going to charge for use of the toilets. It would hammer their online drink sales, about €4 for a small beer last time I was on board.
O'Leary takes the attitude that no news is bad news. He is counting on short attention span and short memories, the only thing most people will remember from this glut of stories - "ryanair = cheap".
P.S. I work in airline technology business but don't have Ryanair as a customer.
I would love to be able to generate this much publicity for my company, and all for free !
I live in the US and have only heard this appalling story from family this week. There is no way that that paying for the use of the bathroom facilities would be tolerated by airline passengers and is an insult.
If this is a play for attention to their airline, Ryanair will be branded as an unsafe, money grabbing, Mickey Mouse outfit. By not providing basic services like bathroom facilties, will their next move be cutting back on flight checks by engineering of aircraft, emergency training of staff, recruitment of qualified personel, or providing drinking water on board?
They remain the worst airline I have ever flown with in almost some 80 flights. I know we all have to try and save money somewhere in these times of economy, but I would still rather pay a pound for a lousy cup of coffee that they have than be insulted to pay the pound to pee when I have finished it.

This is simply appalling. There is no way I would ever fly his airline. If people were smart, they'd also stop flying American Airlines. And start picketing in front of American. Talk about pitiful, this is the straw that broke the camel's back.
Isn't this capitalism though? Competition? :)
