Occupy Wall Street After 2 Months: A Scorecard

Posted by: Dan Beucke on November 17, 2011 at 2:40 PM

ows_banker_600.jpg

It began on Sept. 17 with a few hundred people gathering in lower Manhattan. The protest — against banks, moneyed influence in Washington, corporate power, and a host of other loose causes — rated only sparse mention at first, even in the local press. Their targets saw them as goofy.

No more. Police this week rousted protesters from their Zuccotti Park encampment in a maneuver planned with military precision. Today the Occupiers — this time, by the thousands — were back on the march, swarming the streets around the New York Stock Exchange, clashing with police, and enraging stock exchange employees.

So at two months, what are Occupy Wall Street’s wins and losses?

WINS

BTD logo 2011-11-16 at 6.14.10 pm.png

—Bank fees: Every time you use your Bank of America debit card and don’t pay $5, thank Occupy Wall Street. The decision by big banks earlier this month to roll back their debit-card fees marks the first successful popular uprising by consumers against fees. And, considering the banks’ years-long success in loading them up, that’s no small achievement. Yes, much of the pressure came from the Bank Transfer Day effort, led by Kristen Christian, a Los Angeles art gallery owner who isn’t a direct supporter of OWS (that’s her logo to the right). But the debit fees never would have been rolled back — and 40,000 people wouldn’t have transfered accounts to credit unions — without the accelerant provided by OWS.

—Changing the national conversation: Coming out of the summer, the economic debate in Washington was dominated by talk of cutting the deficit — not jobs, not the wealth disparity in America, and certainly not the role of money in politics. Today that has shifted. Part of my job here each morning is to aggregate stories about the wealth debate; the volume of candidates is impressive. You can see the change in a Google Trends chart of web searches and news references for the term “income inequality.” An analysis of the #OWS Twitter hashtag (thanks to my colleague Dan Fletcher) shows a rise over the past month, spiking ahead of the Zuccotti police action.

There’s been a more subtle shift. Note the number of times that Occupy Wall Street is used as a reference point in analyses of issues ranging from mortgage relief to student loans to taxation. It has lent urgency and weight to what may have seemed like dry policy discussions. In Washington, the GOP in general remains dismissive of the protests. Some on the right support the criticism of corporate bailouts, though they see the protesters as misguided. President Obama first mentioned (as best I can tell) OWS on Oct. 6, going to great lengths to frame the movement around his own policy proposals. His press secretary has taken questions on the movement at nearly every press conference since then.

—Getting Wall Street’s attention: Perhaps even more impressive is how OWS has seeped into Wall Street’s own conversation. This is partly due to the early attention paid by a few influential financial bloggers, such as bank critic Barry Ritholtz. But bankers were clearly stung by the 1% tag and angered by suggestions they hadn’t earned their bonuses. An Oct. 11 march to the Upper East Side Manhattan homes of JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon and hedge fund chief John Paulson got moguls’ attention. OWS even began popping up as a “risk factor” in several corporate financial filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission and in analyst briefings. As Footnoted.org pointed out, in the financial world this is as good an indication as any that a movement has “truly arrived.”

LOSSES

—Public perception: The increasing seediness of the “permanent” OWS encampments — and a handful of highly publicized acts of violence in or near the camps — provided a basis for the police crackdowns in Oakland, Portland, and New York. It wasn’t just the New York Post and its energetic efforts to link OWS to street crime everywhere. Small businesses around Zuccotti Park may have grumbled at first about protesters filling their bathrooms and police blocking foot traffic, but many supported the right to demonstrate. By the end, some businesses were planning their own protest against the city’s failure to clear the camp.

If the movement becomes centered more around symbolic marches and other protest actions, a bigger concern may become the potential for violence — by protesters or police — and how that comes to be perceived. In New York on Thursday, police said five protesters were charged with felony assualt, and several officers and protesters were injured. In Oakland, the Occupiers’ successful march to shut down the city’s huge cargo port was marred by the subsequent window smashing and other acts of property violence by a small number of protesters. Organizers have stressed non-violence. Whether they can keep a lid on their angriest protesters may well determine the movement’s staying power.

—Zuccotti Park: How important is it to have a home base — or, as my colleague Mark Gimein puts it, a stage from which to perform? When the city cleared away the tents at Zuccotti Park, it may have done the movement a favor, giving its first act a dramatic (non-violent) climax and freeing it to move on to more focused actions. Or it may mark the point where the media loses interest.

The bottom line: Those “occupy” web searches may have peaked, and the public may prove to have little stomach for street clashes. But it’s hard to see the big issues raised by the Occupiers fading anytime soon. Especially as the real street theater — the 2012 presidential race — wheels into view.

(Updated to include the Thursday assault charges in New York.)

I guess those who hold the money, power and "blame" for what can only be labeled "GREED" use reaction and deflection in place of "change for the good of everyone". Yet, the answer is still blowing in the wind. May you continue to light a candle in the dusk and perhaps all of your candles will provide a light that will lead to a brighter tomorrow.

The public at large is responsible for BoA killing their $5 fee, not OWS. Attributing that to them is 100% wrong. I can't begin to tell you how websites pushed that story, along with public knowledge on it, and it had nothing to do with OWS.

I'm not a protester, just a reader, but apparently much better informed than you are at this time. You need to know more about OWS and how it works.

The one solid fact in this piece is, "it’s hard to see the big issues raised by the Occupiers fading anytime soon." OWS is here to make sure that doesn't happen. Maybe that's all you really need to know.

U have got to be kidding me ... if u think that BofA decided to not charge the $5.00 fee because of OWS u have no sence of reality .. the ONLY reason BofA stoped the fee was because of people pulling there money out of the bank .. and the people at OWS I am sure did not have accounts with Bof A or any other banks . The OWS people showed the worst of America,, the do nothing , lazy scum that want everything for free .. pull your head out of the Liberal coolaid jug and see whats really going on .. Bof A lisenting to OWS // please ... to these

Missing quite a few Wins there Dan.

Oakland Deputy Mayor and Top Legal Advisor quits.

Seattle Council supports Occupy.

Boulder, CO passes amendment to reduce Corporate Personhood.

There are tons more Wins. The Losses are merely temporary, the Zuccotti Park has pushed the movement to the streets and corners in all directions and it is growing quicker now than ever.

In regards to this statement:

"Every time you use your Bank of America debit card and don’t pay $5, thank Occupy Wall Street. "

LOL? For one thing, it's not $5 per use of the debit card. Secondly, just because they announced that they won't do it, doesn't mean they won't collect that money from somewhere else.

BOA was implementing a $5.00/month fee, not a per transaction fee. (FYI). Also, some of the google searches were to find out just what their goals and objectives were since everytime one got interviewed they could not coherently explain just what they were doing. Their talking points have gotten somewhat more consistent as of late. Why have they not mobbed Fannie & Fredie? I support their right to gather and voice their concerns.

Well, good then. Everyone heard the points. They are being discussed in high places, according to this article. The parks have been cleaned up and out. We the people can, maybe, use our tax paid for parks again for relaxation instead of agonizing. I suggest that OWS not anger the public's sympathy. Go home for the winter. Let the chips lie for the present and take a step back. "Can't please all the people all of the time." Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

wow....win what? A conversation that has no real substance....just whining little kids and hangers ons from decades ago! Loses? Much....they had a chance to really say something to congress and the president but what they want is to take someone else's freedom for their handouts. If you really want change, the distortions in the markets were allowed by the government. Don't blame businesses for exploiting them. If you don't you lose....and on top of that, the government insured you could risk and not fail. Its the gov idiots , not the market or wall street!

The best way out for the occupy wall street protesters is to organize the movement using following steps: (i)Should have central organization with at least 20 office bearers of good standing and clean honest career including President Carter, George Sorros, Buffet and so on; (ii) Divide the groups based on their grievances like homeless, mortgage foreclosures, unemployed, medical issues, graduates unemployed, unemployed... due to outsource, large bank greediness, stock market greediness, political corruption, lobbies terrors, capitalists greediness; millionaires greediness and so many others (iii) each specified group should be directed to join hands together and stage demonstration during the working hours at location of their head offices through out America on daily basis. The protesters can meet at the central place but divide in groups to demonstrate at different locations peacefully keeping good manner and following rules and regulation using non-violence means distributing and shouting meaningful slogans and hand over write-up to the media, press and who ever is visiting these buildings. Unless the movement is planed and projected in a organized way, nothing will happen. The 1% interested party is waiting for the early demise of the movement. They think it is almost at the last stage and burial is closer than they thought.

Dan, your article is laughable. The notion that the OWS has done or caused any of the instances you sighted as "WINS" is a joke. The only thing they have done is stunk up the places that they have occupied. The myth that this is some sort of grassroots movement is just that a myth; perpetuated by a far left leaning media. This media just like you long are longing for the Left's version of the Tea Party. My advice to the OWS people is take a shower, get a job and quit your CRYING! Life is not FAIR. The sooner you can grasp that the better off your life is going to be.

The largest public perception of the problems at OWS is a thorough understanding that the problems of drug use, violence, homelessness, et al. occur many 100,000 fold in the larger society. The public largely recognizes that OWS has attempted to confront the problems in as positive manner as possible. The public largely understands that these social ills are due, in no small part, to income inequity.

The OWS movement has legs and will change America. Perhaps its most enduring contribution is its insistence on all of our first amendment rights. Everyone who is cognizant of the governmental actions of the last 10 years is thankful for that.

Yet another article that takes a positative spin with out looking at what they are demanding! It is on their web site, very socilist & communist demands. They scream Kill the Jews but the media all but ignores it.

They make the Tea Party look like nazis when they really are trying to make change and offer solutions. These are a bunch of lazy & spoiled people that have made no effort to start a career or business.

Check out their demands and see if you still want to support them: http://occupywallst.org/forum/proposed-list-of-ows-demands/

This all reminds me of the 1960s. A lot of noise, seedy behavior, and eventually violence. The Occupiers are better behaved than their narcissist predecessors, but the idea that large demonstrations can change a society with all its complexity is not supported by history. The best that can happen is some chaos, the worst a fuller chaos.

If you want a job, it makes little sense to rail against the banks (which is historically done in bad times). It makes more sense to rail about job creation. Yes, income differences should be narrowed, but it will not happen by demonstrating.

People who are angry are usually cognitively challenged in terms of regulating behavior to best attack a complex problem. They look for easy answers and emote a whole lot. (See the role of anger and stress on cognitive performance.)

The methods of earlier narcissists will not work now. However, remember that the 60s demonstrators promised to destroy America's institutions and to build new ones. Do you like where the country is now with a destroyed educational system, institutionalized greed (especially at the personal level...institutions are not greedy, their managers and owners are).

Go home, clean up, and continue to look for work. If you can, upgrade your skills to make you more attractive than the competition. As they say" Get Real.

Wait a second, OWS is the reason BOA dropped their fees? LOL- that is so stupid it funny. With or without teh Obamaneers aka protetstors for Socialism the backlash would have been fierce and they would have been forced to drop it. Had zero to do with these vagrant squatters- you forget to mention the residents of the Financial district who have to put up with this crap. Handful of incidents? Heroin heads, fights, crapping and urinating on the streets, stopping traffic, scaring kids and honest working people. Minor details but worthy of mention- those of us who pay rent to live downtown and work for a living and do pay taxes and our bills have rights as well. Pay for their mistakes, and their student loans, and their houses? this is not a welfare nation= I hear the message but this is about lazy bums looking for handouts simply.

We could certainly wish that the non-violent Ghandi strategy will work but as in the early days of the Union movement, "Authority" will soon have too much of this unrest and attempt to stamp it out. I forsee it escalating into a violent repression that will have Lybian like consequenses. Indeed we do need reform, basic reform of our laws and institutions. Our leaders will do well to guide this revolution rather than attempt a futil attemopt to quell it.

The author of this article must be a pothead.

Giving the OWS movement credit for the BoA dropping fees is a joke. Try giving credit to all the media outlets that reported the story of BoA's plan.

Changing the national conversation from the deficit to jobs is a victory for OWS? Really? So apparently bankrupting our government so it collapses is ok but 10% unemployment isn't? Um, the 90% of us who have a job would like our government to solve the deficit issue. This is a majority rules country. If anything, they have distracted our government from an issue that will eventually lead to all of us speaking Chinese.

Impressed by OWS getting Wall Streets attention? Seriously? And what has that accomplished? Oh ya, wall street pulled some strings and had everyone evicted. Sounds like a win to me.

Now I'm not one of the 1% but I just can't get behind the OWS movement. It's too unorganized and their mission isn't clear. If they wanted to be taken seriously, they would ask all the drug addicts and retards to leave their camps.

To the OWS folks that are really struggling to get by- I wish you the best, I hope some measure of support gets to you before it is too late.

To the rest of you OWS bandwagon lazy losers- quit reading this post on your iPad or smartphone, you shouldn't be spending the little money that you have on an unlimited data plan anyway. OWS and Tea Party are two groups of angry people who are upset at the lack of control that they have and the fact that the powerful have all of the control.

The tea party seemed to have more of a focus and a fairly straight forward message. I was more supportive of OWS in the very beginning... but what I saw were frankly the Millenium generation... unable to formulate a clear thought... and they seemed to be mostly adult children who were kicked out of their parents basements, taking their lap tops and iphone/etc devices in an effort to recreate the woodstock event that their parents participated in. I am very disappointed in what has happened to what could have been a promising movement... You credit this group with the changes banks made... that shift was already beginning before these folks without money began their effort..Let's be honest who can afford not to work for 2 months... I certainly can't... no job would allow that...

I hope they can come up with a better message than "mommy and daddy why can't I have some more of your money... thinking about looking for work with my Music theory degree is so hard, I refuse to go into sales... I will hold my breath until I get my way"

One of the most interesting discoveries with OWS is how so many people can be convinced to lump all the protesters into the category of good-for-nothings.

I was at one of these protests and was surprised to see how many veterans, retired people and well-dressed professionals were there. About 40% were over the age of 35. The kids that I saw there were loud, but they weren't wild-eyed lunes.

I didn't expect this based on what I saw on TV.

Good article Dan. I like all the comments it generated from people that assume the OWS people are all out of work, hippies, do nothings, etc. Many are employed in every type of ocupation and there are of course many students worked about jobs, their parents and the future of our country. These people are taking a more involved role in our society as compared to people that complain about others on the internet. Those are the real "do nothings" :-)

That's right, they should Occupy Wall-Mart instead of Wall Street. Wall Street icon Walmart is the biggest beneficiary of china's fraudulently set exchange rate with the US dollar. Walmart knowingly took advantage of this and benefited immensely. Walmart has devastated American manufacturing and is now deceitfully reducing needed benefits to its employees in USA. Black Friday is get rich Friday for Walmart- thru devious imports. And that hurts USA... hurt... hurt ... hurt. Buy things made in America - support American jobs. Change Sam Walton's name to Sum-ting Wong.

So... I should thank this crowd for NOT WORKING, which is exactly what they are complaining about (financial inequality), while I have put in over 550 hours in two months building up my company so that I can hire more people? REALLY? And just like the media, they give the OWSers more "Wins" than "Losses" to make it all look so positive. From my perspective, I don't need to "thank" anyone for the chaos and stupidity that this has brought about, detracting from the real issues our country is facing. I don't use Bank of America because they ARE rip-offs. I have other choices. I didn't need some lazy, hippie-like protester wasting their life for that. Wow, what a representation of the Human Capital in the United States. No wonder we're in such deep trouble. Why aren't they "Occupy Washington" instead?

The neighsayers offering the petty deflection of OWS protestors as dirty,or hippies,or lazy or druggies are in full denial of the core momentum of OWS. This isn't going away. These relatively small groups(thus far) have a massive back up army of patiently pissed off educated masses ready to put up a strong and relentless fight.8 yrs of a Bush sabotage of the American identity and 3 yrs of a corporate driven congress dragging the country down. People are buried in school debt and democracy has spoiled with privatization and bad governance. The very wealthy have political influence and money. The young have no future and nothing to lose. You tell me,who has the real power?

All of you people deriding the protesters as just lazy hippies who want free handouts, and just need to shower and gets jobs, are so off-base.

1) Bringing up people's perceived hygiene isn't actually an argument.
2) Many of them (myself included) have jobs. Many who don't have jobs can't find them, because as you may now unemployment is high and large corporations keep firing people to increase profits rather than keep people on board.
3) They aren't just "hippies." The movement consists of people from all walks of life.
4) They don't want handouts. They want equality.

The fact of the matter is there are legitimate grievances to be had.

1) The wealth disparity in this country has reached unhealthy proportions that is damaging our economy.
2) Wall street promotes a culture of greed and profit-mongering that makes short-term gain for the few take precedence over long-term gain for the masses and the country.
3) Wall street is in many ways is just a rigged system for insiders that benefits the few over the many.
4) Corporate money in politics is very damaging to our country, causing politicians to more often than not serve their corporate backers rather than the American people. Corporations continue to buy politicians and policy unabated.

The list of grievances goes on. For people to say they have no merit, or the movement has no message besides "gimme, gimme, gimme" is unfair and just plain wrong.

Dan this a joke of an article. You did zero investigation, for if you did you would have only needed to skim there surface to know B of A was charging five bucks a month for service fee on checking, not five bucks per transaction. Also OWS did not cause the fee to be retracted, it was a much broader issue with customers.

It is no longer American capitalism as in the production of necessities and true innovation. It is now American capitalism in producing junk, creative financing and more and more fees and basically all lies and more lies upon more lies. The protests do not include the U.S. government because it is not a U.S. government movement. Although we can bunch together some congressmen along with their corporate sponsors, they are two distinct entities but I also predict a movement to simply 'undo' Congress as we know it and occupy Washington will appear in near future. Protest against governments are plentiful and it is not a challenge as some suggest. Personally, I think Wall Street is harder to 'undo'

Delusional is the best way to describe the claim that OWS had anything to do with defeating fees on debit cards. If OWS protesters had a clue, they would be protesting GE, who paid ZERO taxes on $14 billion in profits, and its CEO, Immelt, who is sending jobs overseas faster than I could flip a hamburger. They would be protesting Obama. whose 'economic rescue plan' rescued his cronies in Wall Street, and padded the pockets of green jobs shysters like Solyndra. They would be protesting the hedge funds who are responsible for the chaos in the stock market, and members of Congress like Nancy Pelosi, who use insider trader information not available to the average citizen, to make millions.
Instead, OWS are harassing & terrorizing innocent private citizens whose only crime is trying to earn a living.

Well done my friends,
the banks don't give anything back unless there is a lot of opposition to their cheating greedy habits. And a very loud puplic protest is best, for if Americans in America don't speak, Who Will ? and if Americans in America don't Act, Who Will?. The American Corporates with American politicians, thought it was OK (or'll kreckt) for Arabs to kill Arabs in the name of protest & regime change. So why can't Americans just protest.Maybe it should be "do unto others" etc. However, great work my friends,

Not a bad article. But the comments here are ridiculous.
Have you done no research at all?
These people are protesting the influence of corporations on our policy making. It's very hard to articulate though because that one issue branches out into every facet of our daily lives.
33,000 people who gathered tonight in New York have my thanks.
I refuse to believe these people are all jobless antisemitic hippies. And you shouldn't either.

OWS does not represent working people. All the represent are the socialist policies of Europe. Look at the shape Europe is in..they're broke. I wish these people would go back under the rock they came from and leave the rest of us alone..to go to work and earn a living.

When an organization comes that wants to have a meaningful conversation with the other side, then I'll call it a win. Otherwise, the only thing this movement is successful at is dividing a country already divided. When are people going to come to their senses and realize that results come from communication, not division? I'm waiting for someone at OWS to stand up and proclaim that they'd like to have a one on one conversation with a representative from the so-called 1% and discuss things like adults.

Perceval Pen

November 18, 2011 1:17 AM

All I know is 2 months and one day ago every conversation I overheard in the train, nearly every social media post I saw, and most of the daily exchanges others initiated with me were about tv shows, sports, a party, or a restaurant, maybe celeb gossip (or personal gossip). And that was true for years, while people would say to me "Oh Blue, You are always thinking too hard about stuff." Or something like that...
Now, all the sudden, in the last few months people are talking to each other...
About reality, not reality tv, not about fantasy but about how to realize dreams, about how they really feel, and what they think....people are talking now about the things that directly create and effect our lives. And this I've never known before now. So it's ok with me if we don't all agree about the source of the problems, or about what is or is not a problem. What is more important than anything is that the conversation has finally started, not just amongst pundits, but amongst us all. We don't need a degree to understand the difficulties and pain in our lives... and many with degrees are finding they aren't helping us "to get there" quite like we thought they would.
This conversation is the real win I see for OWS. We in the land of bread and circuses are not well practiced at exercising power and creativity in our own lives, but slowly and clumsily we begin.

I didn't expect this based on what I saw on TV."

@Doug
1. Learn to spell and use correct grammar.
2. 65,000 people pulling their money out of big banks and putting it into credit unions during the month of October had NOTHING to do with OWS?
3. You're an idiot.

PaidTrolls

November 18, 2011 5:01 AM

I think HuffPost should do an investigation into the trolls on the internet around this movement. I cannot find these people in real life. It's like they don't even exist. Yet on the internet, it seems like there are so many people calling these protesters names. Always the same names, always the same rhetoric without any real substance.

I'm convinced that there are people being paid to create an illusion of public opinion by creating multiple accounts and posting under the guise of multiple identities who conveniently all cannot actually make any real arguments.

Call me paranoid, but does anyone else think something smells funny here?

Breaking Bad

November 18, 2011 8:38 AM

And everybody know is it was just an autocorrect that put OWS in those corporate financial mailings!!!!

The movement had NOTHING to do with that. AT ALL.

Seriously, anyone with a brain knows that. What is wrong with you pot smoking, dirty, stinky, lying, lazy, crummy, messy fools?

Larry

November 18, 2011 10:05 AM

The thing that is most amazing is those on
Wall Street that still don't understand the
anger. Bloomberg for example.

The common refrain of the priviledged to OWS. "Get a job" told to a recent college
graduates, good grades, hundreds of resumes,
no job, $100K debt. Debt that unlike debt on Wall Street cannot be removed by bankruptcy.

Overwhelming dystopian sci-fi movie force for
a bunch of unarmed kids with tents.

I'm one of the lucky few, am just under the
1%. Have one of the last remaining well paid
jobs outside of finance, senior software
developer. Yet unlike the insulated world of
Wall Street, I have many friends that are
being run into the ground by this economy.

Wall Street people, leave your little bubble
for a while and visit the real world the rest
of us live in! Your "let them eat cake"
attitude will end badly. Do not be fooled into
believing that you can put this down with
overwhelming violence again and again. Rather
be grateful that it is tents and free speech
rather than the Guillotine you face.

This comment is directed to Mike K. The link you provide to the OWS web site does not give a list of OWS demands. The list was entered by an individual. It's one person's list of demands and nothing to do with OWS. OWS is not supporting this list of demands by an individual.

The self-proclaimed masters of the universe among us may be a lot things, but "clueless" or else "disconnected" is not, definitely not an accurate way of describing them. Their overly educated sycophants and absurdly enriched minions present this BS about them as if it represented something factual. It is a ruse. These masters of the universe know what is going on. After all, they are ruling the world in our time. They happen to be the best people I know at 'playing stupid'. As a group, these so-called captains of finance can better be defined by their malignant narcissism, pathological arrogance, risk-taking addiction, extreme foolhardiness and outrageous greedmongering activities.

The "wins" grossly outweigh the "losses" and honestly, the "losses" were trivial and unavoidable. The true purpose of OWS has always been to expose the general public to awareness about the corporate corruption in politics. Issues like the need to reinstall Glass-Steagall, to fight Citizens United- citizen corporatehood which has essentially stolen our voice as citizens from politicians who are now simply backed and funded by private sectors and corporations. Issues like Big banks (as mentioned in your article) constantly tagging on unjustifiable fees, collateralized debt obligations, betting against their own investment products through the purchase of credit default swaps, or now bid rigging. Which led to a reported 4.9 billion dollar transfer of wealth and a drop of extra fees planned by BOA and other big banks.

As for the "losses". You work for bloomberg.com as a journalist I'm assuming. You know about the media slant nationwide with skewed and biased coverage by both reporters and anylsts. If you live in NYC you know there were over 30,000 people peacefully marching across the Brooklyn Bridge while cars in both directions honked and waved to protesters above shouting their support. You would have seen an 8 story projection on the Verizon building in the background tickering "we are the 99%, do not be afraid, welcome to the global revolution, followed by a list of occupy locations. And yet what do we see on our corporately owned media stations? Titles like "200+ arrested in new york" yet specific numerical estimates in larger occupy locations.

As for losing a small plot of land. So be it. The movement stands to occupy the minds of fellow americans not a park. The park was just the beginning, but since you brought it up: You know that bloomberg was involved in a coordinated effort by several nationwide city officials to shut down occupys throughout America. All seemed to come to a simotaneous conclusion with a nearly verbatim excuse. We are worried about public health and safety. Really? SO when there was an obscure blizzard coming abnormally early in the fall and it was suddenly "brought to bloombers attention" that there were propaine stoves and generators for heat within the park which presented a firehazard, he wasn't doing that in hopes that the cold weather would essentially freeze people out right? It was for their own health and safety of course. If only someone would have frozen to death I'd have loved to hear that story; as horrifyingly sad as that would have been. But what did the people do? They rallied together, donated blankets, spent thousands of dollars on silent bicycle generators and had a military grade, weatherproof canopy/tent erected. The sanitation and medical area bolstered their supplies and numbers and OWS survived. I dropped by the park after work the day before the eviction. Anyone and everyone was welcome and had FULL ACCESS to the park, which was anything but unsanitary. In closing. We both know the truth here and more and more Americans are begining to see it. Truly fair and balanced news doesn't present half truths regardless of whom your employer might be. Journalistic integrity in America died with Political integrity. Corporatism has taken over. Unchecked Capitalism- something that was once a precious gift, has infiltrated and regulated our democracy instead of the reverse. That is why the people are uniting for a plethora of different issues rather than simply one or two specifics. Because the bounds of corruption within the political and economic system right now is seemingly limitless.

Dan, you're a brave man to post this blog on Bloomberg.com. The people who post here generally know little or nothing about those of us who support #OWS. I certainly hope some of your comments manage to piece their self delusion but doubt that it will. To paraphrase a wise man, I guess, if you educate one of them, it is as if you educated the whole world. Carry on.

Roger

November 18, 2011 4:41 PM

As far as I'm concerned the OWS did not raise any issues that I was not already well aware of. Nor do I think they deserve credit the author gives them for bank fees, changing national attention when most of us were already complaining. Wall streets attention was when they prevented the workers from doing their jobs. Middle class workers who are justifiably upset.

I see the OSW group as a Jealous, spoiled, and selfish group who trample over the middle class they claim to represent. They should stop and think that we middle class and ever most of the poor in the US "Are the 1% on a world wide scale"

Roger

November 18, 2011 4:51 PM

Although I agree with many of the OWS complaints, I disagree with the source of the problems. I have no problem with the rich or industry getting rich. It's the politicians setting things up so a select few can take advantage of the system and the current administration is the worst of any we've had. Capitalism may not be perfect but it is the best system to come along. If you note, the Socialist and Communist countries are having the same problems only they are worse off than we are. IOW the OWS are blaming the wrong people and hurting the ones most vulnerable.

AS someone who is a professional and has worked all my life to get where I am, I find the lack of a voice by the uS citizen and voter disturbing. I think the "Occupy" movement will continue and will spread to a broader and broader sector of the population, unless our system of government changes to have our elected representatives stop taking any outside contributions or jobs after they leave office. They might as well start calling on Congressmen while in session as "the gentleman from Exxon"

The current Occupy Wall Street movement is the best illustration to date
of what President Barack Obama's America looks like. It is an America
where the lawless, unaccomplished, ignorant and incompetent rule. It is
an America where those who have sacrificed nothing pillage and destroy
the lives of those who have sacrificed greatly.

It is an America where history is rewritten to honor dictators, murderers
and thieves. It is an America where violence, racism, hatred, class warfare
and murder are all promoted as acceptable means of overturning the American
civil society.

It is an America where humans have been degraded to the level of animals:
defecating in public, having sex in public, devoid of basic hygiene. It is an
America where the basic tenets of a civil society, including faith, family, a
free press and individual rights, have been rejected. It is an America where
our founding documents have been shredded and, with them, every person's
guaranteed liberties.

It is an America where, ultimately, great suffering will come to the American
people, but the rulers like Obama, Michelle Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi,
Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Joe Biden, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farrakhan, liberal
college professors, union bosses and other loyal liberal/Communist Party members
will live in opulent splendor.

It is the America that Obama and the Democratic Party have created with the
willing assistance of the American media, Hollywood , unions, universities, the
Communist Party of America, the Black Panthers and numerous anti-American
foreign entities.

Barack Obama has brought more destruction upon this country in four years than
any other event in the history of our nation, but it is just the beginning of what he
and his comrades are capable of.

The Occupy Wall Street movement is just another step in their plan for the
annihilation of America .

"Socialism, in general, has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual
could ignore or evade it."

a lot of people posting on here are completely insane, ignorant and bigoted. 70% of OWS protesters are employed (usually with multiple jobs) and chances are, they had their money in either BoA, Wells Fargo, etc. i agree with the OWS movement, i am employed, a college grad and i have a BoA account. OWS absolutely helped prevent BoA from implementing their $5 monthly charge. to say otherwise is stupid. was it the sole reason? no, and to say otherwise is equally stupid. but it did contribute. over half the country agrees with the OWS movement. take your own advice and stop drinking the kool-aid your favorite party is feeding you.

It was unfortunately that there is always someone that starts trouble when demonstrating. I think the time has come to look after your pocket books in a small way, were nobody has ever mentioned so far. In my opinion there is no way to beat the big fat cats. They always find ways to make it work for them. The time has come to go after our daily lively hood. The prices in the grocery stores needs to be controlled with price control by government,I think there is a law somewhere for price control,it is not being enforced There is no more such a thing as a nickle increase for a loaf of bread etc, etc. It is the same for all products. There is were people can fight back. Forget about wall street and all the crap. It is time to look after your family's grocery bill. This my opinion only. Just do not buy a head of lettuce when it is $1.99 leave it there to rot. All it takes is one week, and the price will come down.If it go' up to much,do it again and again Everyone has to put there effort into this. No matter were you live

It is indeed my belief that mesothelioma can be the most lethal cancer. It's got unusual traits. The more I really look at it the more I am assured it does not conduct itself like a true solid tissue cancer. If mesothelioma is actually a rogue viral infection, then there is the chance of developing a vaccine and offering vaccination for asbestos subjected people who are at high risk with developing foreseeable future asbestos related malignancies. Thanks for giving your ideas for this important health issue.

Thanks for the tips you share through this website. In addition, many young women which become pregnant usually do not even try to get health insurance coverage because they have anxiety they won't qualify. Although a few states currently require that insurers supply coverage irrespective of the pre-existing conditions. Rates on these types of guaranteed plans are usually bigger, but when considering the high cost of health care bills it may be your safer approach to take to protect a person's financial future.

One other thing I would like to say is that as opposed to trying to match all your online degree training on times that you finish work (as most people are fatigued when they get back), try to find most of your lessons on the week-ends and only a couple courses in weekdays, even if it means taking some time away from your weekend. This is really good because on the saturdays and sundays, you will be much more rested along with concentrated on school work. Thanks for the different tips I have discovered from your site.

One more thing. I believe that there are quite a few travel insurance sites of respected companies that allow you to enter a trip details and find you the rates. You can also purchase the international travel insurance policy online by using the credit card. All you should do is always to enter your current travel specifics and you can start to see the plans side-by-side. Just find the program that suits your capacity to pay and needs after which it use your bank credit card to buy that. Travel insurance online is a good way to take a look for a reputable company with regard to international holiday insurance. Thanks for discussing your ideas.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

Things i have seen in terms of laptop or computer memory is the fact there are features such as SDRAM, DDR and so on, that must fit in with the technical specs of the mother board. If the pc's motherboard is reasonably current and there are no operating-system issues, upgrading the memory space literally usually takes under an hour or so. It's one of many easiest personal computer upgrade techniques one can imagine. Thanks for spreading your ideas.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

It's my opinion that a foreclosure can have a important effect on the client's life. Foreclosures can have a 7 to 10 years negative effects on a applicant's credit report. Any borrower having applied for a home loan or virtually any loans as an example, knows that the actual worse credit rating can be, the more tough it is for any decent mortgage loan. In addition, it could affect a borrower's capacity to find a quality place to lease or hire, if that will become the alternative real estate solution. Interesting blog post.

I believe what you said was very logical. However, what about this? suppose you wrote a catchier title? I mean, I don't want to tell you how to run your website, but suppose you added something that makes people desire more? I mean Occupy Wall Street After 2 Months: A Scorecard - BusinessWeek is a little vanilla. You ought to peek at Yahoo's front page and see how they create news titles to grab people to click. You might add a video or a picture or two to get people excited about what you've written. In my opinion, it might bring your posts a little bit more interesting.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Thing is, I've just migrated to Wordpress. However, I have a number of people who have subscribed to my feeds from my blogger blog. What should I do to ensure that they now receive updates from my Wordpress blog? . . FYI, I have a feedburner account..

You won’t believe it but recently I was sorely tempted to include your web site as my personal homepage. I reckoned this way I would have the ease of examining the goodness of your site as soon as I open my chrome. However, I had to satisfy my temptation with merely bookmarking your website since I couldn’t eliminate my own site from the default homepage option (even though I wanted to). Anyway, do keep your blogposts updated.
