Free ISPs Start to Take Hold
Internet service providers that offer their service for free are just getting off the ground this year. Pioneers like NetZero and AltaVista are expected to rack up 3.3 million U.S. customers by yearend. And that total is expected to grow to 13 million in 2003. But because of reliability and customer service concerns, traditional ISPs are expected to keep the lead, with about 60 million customers.

Free ISP customers:
1999 3.3 million
2000 6.2 million
2001 8.8 million
2002 11.1 million
2003 13.0 million
