Japanese Companies Ready for the Internet Age
Diamond, a major Japanese publisher, compiled a ranking of Japanese companies that it says are the best prepared for the Internet Age. Researchers looked at market capitalization, polled top market analysts on their views, and reviewed the financial standing of each company. A major factor was the growth in market cap since 1995, when Internet use, both business and individual, started spreading in Japan.
| Company | Market-cap growth since 1995 |
| Sony Corp. | 239.1% |
| The company is linking most of its operations to the Net, and it's rolling out consumer electronics products that can be connected to the Web. |
| Softbank Corp. | 833.5% |
| The cyber-conglomerate gets credit for waking Japan up to the Net's potential. |
| Fujitsu Ltd. | 178.6% |
| This high-tech giant is stripping down to focus on Internet-based IT services for businesses, e-commerce, and next-generation wireless communications technology. |
| Seven-Eleven Japan Co. | 61.7% |
| This highly successful convenience-store retailer offers Internet services for its shoppers. |
| NTT | 41.8% |
| Japan's mammoth domestic carrier was selected because of its future potential. Currently, it's under attack for holding up Internet growth on the part of consumers because of its expensive local-access phone charges. It will introduce flat-rate Internet-access fees soon. More important, it's developing Internet-ready telecom systems. |
