Web Software Will Rule

Who says software is dead? Oh sure, the Internet is rewriting the rules. And there's no question that software applications that run on computer desktops will soon go the way of 8-track cassette players. But sales of e-commerce software -- the plumbing of Web sites -- will quadruple by 2003, according to Forrester Research. That's largely because companies looking to take advantage of the Web's potential are going to need complex, prepackaged software to make it work.

(in millions) E-commerce software spending

1999 $3,140

2000 $7,801

2001 $11,095

2002 $12,886

2003 $14,544
