The Net's Future Effect on All Retail

In five years, the Internet is expected to influence 75% of all retail spending in the U.S., up from 43% in 1999. According to market researcher Jupiter Communications, by 2005 consumers will spend $200 billion at retail Web sites and research another $632 billion worth of purchases on the Internet, but buy the goods at brick-and-mortar stores.

Net-influenced spending in the U.S. for both online purchases and those researched or first discovered online but conducted at a store:

2000 $235 billion

2005 $831 billion
