Developing Economies? In the E-World, Not So Fast

It doesn't seem likely that the world's digital divide will be narrowing soon. A new study by Forrester Research predicts that rich economies -- North America, Western Europe, and the industrial Asian economies -- will continue to dominate e-commerce in the next five years, with 12 countries accounting for 89% of the $6.9 trillion total in 2004. The rest of the world, plagued with patchy infrastructure, is expected to play only a marginal role.

E-commerce in 2004:

North America $3,500 billion

Asia-Pacific $1,600 billion

Western Europe $1,500 billion

Latin America $82 billion

Middle East, Eastern Europe and Africa $69 billion
