Computer Security Breaches Climb

Big Business isn't too candid about its computer-security woes -- and for good reason. A Computer Security Institute/FBI survey of 273 large corporations and government agencies found rampant computer crime, nearly all of it unreported to law enforcement. Estimated fraud and security losses from those surveyed totaled $265 million. Other findings:

Percentage of respondents who detected:

Computer security breaches within the last 12 months 90%

Employee abuse of Internet access privileges (downloading pornography or pirated software, or inappropriate use of e-mail systems) 79%

Denial-of-service attacks 27%

System penetration from the outside 25%

Theft of transaction information 8%

Financial fraud 3%
