While the private sector has raced to embrace e-commerce, U.S. government agencies are just starting to get the hang of doing business on the Internet. A Gartner Group Inc. study projects that government spending on e-business hardware, software, and related services will grow from $1.5 billion in 2000 to more than $6.2 billion by 2005. Government-to-government and government-to-business purchases will account for nearly 70% of online government spending in 2000, with revenue reaching $1 billion. Government-to-citizen transactions -- from paying parking tickets to renewing fishing licenses online -- will grow from $455 million in 2000 to $2.2 billion in 2005.
