The Web Goes Mobile

The mobile Internet is just getting started, but don't look for a repeat of the plugged-in variety. While the computer-based Net is dominated by the U.S. and the English language, the mobile variety could take root anywhere. And with consumers accessing the Net through what are expected to be increasingly cheaper mobile phones and other handheld devices, global demographics should count more than ever. The upshot: China could become a mobile Net giant. Kalba International, a consulting firm based in Waltham, Mass., predicts that by 2011, China will be the largest single-country market for so-called Third Generation, the broadband Internet access on mobile devices.

Third Generation subscribers in 2011:

China 247 million

U.S. 208 million

Europe 251 million

Japan 96 million
