Health Care's Big Online Potential
Online health-care transactions are poised to explode over the next five years. The amount of health-care money moving over the Internet will be 58 times 1999's total, or $370 billion, by 2004, according to Forrester Research. But don't count on online consumer purchases of pharmaceuticals, supplies, and vitamins to fuel that growth. The vast majority of health-care e-commerce -- some $348 billion, or 95% of the total -- will come from business-to-business transactions as hospitals start ordering supplies, doctors file insurance paperwork, and manufacturers sell drugs and equipment over the Web.
