FLAT-PANEL DISPLAYS

Samsung SyncMaster 151S
EDITORS' CHOICE
CNET RATING: 9
DESCRIPTION: TFT active matrix, 15" display, PC, 1024 x 768 max resolution, 0.30 mm dot pitch

GOOD: Wide viewing angles; 360-degree swivel; excellent warranty and support.

BAD: Overly tight tilt mechanism; slightly unsteady base.

BOTTOMLINE: Price isn't everything; for just a few dollars more, the 151S ratchets up the features to create a low-cost presentation champ.

Formac Gallery 1740 (DVI)
EDITORS' CHOICE
CNET RATING: 8
DESCRIPTION: TFT active matrix, 17.4" display, Mac, 1,280 x 1,024 max resolution, 0.27 mm dot pitch

GOOD: Bright, sharp display; easy setup; works with both PCs and Macs with DVI or ADC connectors; built-in USB hub.

BAD: Stand and frame feel a little flimsy; picture-frame design uses more desk space than do pedestal-mounted displays.

BOTTOMLINE: The Formac Gallery 1740 offers picture quality nearly as good as that of an Apple display but for a lower price and with more connectivity. Only its slightly flimsy frame disappointed us.

Compaq TFT7020
EDITORS' CHOICE
CNET RATING: 8
DESCRIPTION: TFT active matrix, 17" display, PC, 1280 x 1024 max resolution, 0.26 Mm dot pitch

GOOD: Excellent focus; solid construction; affordable price; comprehensive support.

BAD: Inconsistent color performance.

BOTTOMLINE: The TFT7020's outstanding focus, sturdy build, and reasonable cost make it a great value for business users.

NEC MultiSync 1550V
EDITORS' CHOICE
CNET RATING: 8
GOOD: Compact and lightweight design; thin bezel frame; intuitive controls.

BAD: Small base makes display easier to tip over.

BOTTOMLINE: This thin monitor is one of the best values in its price class; it is sleek, compact, and stylish, with very good performance.
