Thankful To Have A Job

Posted by: Lauren Young on November 27

Sure, the financial markets are in the toilet, and the economy sucks. But I have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving: wonderful friends and family, good health (aside from the nasty cold that has lingered since November 6), and a roof over my head.

Is it so wrong to say that I’m especially thankful to be employed?

Last Friday I attended an annual dinner event for journalists that I liken to the prom. (It’s black tie, and there is a lot of revelry.) I saw at least 10 colleagues from previous jobs. I swear I had the same conversation with all of them:

Friend: How are you?
Me: Okay, thankfully still employed. How about you?
Friend: Still employed-for now.

I realize some readers of the Working Parents blog may be out of work or fearing layoffs. I do not mean to be insensitive or sound like a braggart. I’m just incredibly grateful to have a job in a recession. My spouse is also gainfully employed. We are incredibly lucky.

And for that I give thanks.

From the ranks of the unemployed and underemployed this holiday season, thank you for your lovely post! I don't think I ever appreciated the value of being employed during the holidays as I do now that work is scarce and prospects of new opportunities fade until the new year.

Great article. My plumber came to my apt. yesterday (11.26), we discussed how it was after 5pm and we were both still working (though we both planned on 'finishing' work early for some holiday preparations). Then we both smiled and agreed that we were both happy to have jobs. Happy Thanksgiving.

yes my wife is in the same boat, one of the few people left in her department. Yes I don't like her traveling so much but I'm very thankfull she has such a good paying job.

I am thankful for my practice. I told my two daughters, ages 6 and 4, that we are going to keep our Thanksgiving decorations that they made in school hanging up to remind us that every day is "Thanksgiving" at our house!
