I had an interesting meeting with Damian McKinney, CEO of the consulting firm McKinney Rogers. His clients include Walmart, Bacardi and Pfizer.
We discussed how CEOs are now struggling to move their teams out of a defensive, bunker mentality and into a more opportunistic stance.
Below are steps he is advising his clients to take. Some sound deceptively simple. And yet, it’s surprising how few CEOs implement them:
* Send a simple and clear message to employees about where your company is going. And think big. The vision needs to excite your A team who have already been giving their all during a recession to give even more during a recovery. So paint a picture for employees that is exciting. It should be as dramatic as when former US President John F. Kennedy announced before Congress in 1961 that the US would send a man to the moon. Or at least as close as you can get.
*Tell your A team to take a vacation. They won’t be able to give you their all if they’re exhausted from putting out fires during the recession.
*Hand many of your responsibilities over to your deputies. This will free you up to hone a strategy for a recovery while giving them the opportunity to step up and shine. Their reaction will also assist you in succession planning.
