Dare to Prepare

How do you prepare for a potentially life-changing meeting, presentation, or event? Some people stand in front of a mirror, trying to pump themselves up to get confidence. Others meticulously do their homework for days, if not weeks, in advance.

In his new book, Dare to Prepare, baseball agent/lawyer Ronald Shapiro outlines a couple of different steps:

1. Understand your objectives (that will allegedly give you calmness and clarity)
2. Use precedents to understand the context of your work (and hopefully avoid others’ mistakes)
3. Know your alternatives (ie. be prepared that it might not go as planned)
4. Define the interests of the other party
5. Set your strategy AFTER you have done your homeworkd. Don’t rush into a plan without knowing the bigger picture.
6. Construct a timeline (ie. align dates with key milestones)
7. Pick a tean (and allocate responsibilities)
8. Write your script (and check it with a team member)

It’s the stuff of which New Year’s Resolutions are made. With a Jan. 8 publication date, Shapiro is obviously hoping to get readers who are revved up to make 2008 the year where they figure out how to win in business and beyond.
