Finally! Apple gets a woman on its board. As I noted earlier this year in a story on why women on boards make more than men—turns out, they’re frequently nominated to committees or chosen to lead them—a few companies out there still don’t have women on their boards. According to executive search firm Spencer Stuart, some 91% of S&P 500 companies have at least one woman on their boards.
But on Jan. 7, Apple announced that Andrea Jung, Chairman and CEO of Avon Products, will join its board. What’s interesting is this study by executive search firm Bridge Partners. While Silicon Valley technology companies are better than other tech firms when it comes to women in management (14.5% of the “Silicon Valley top 25” are female, versus just 8% among top non-Valley tech firms), they do worse when it comes to minority women on boards. In fact, until Andrea Jung, the percentage of women minorities on Silicon Valley boards was just that: zero. Andrea ups the percentage to 0.5%.
