There is a reason Google, so much the world’s top talent magnet that it turns down Ivy League Phi Beta Kappas, offers perks such as cash for hybrid cars, eco-friendly dry cleaning, and free shuttle bus service. Google workers are not only ridiculously rich but also ridiculously young.

They get it. They want their employers to be working on the whole carbon footprint thing. They want to labor for bosses that care about sustainability. They want to know how green their offices are.

That’s why a rash of employers are implemeting greening of the office programs. Look around. Your icy air conditioning, all those styrofoam cups, leaving the lights on round the clock. All are under siege.

Of late strategies include eyeing business travel. Until the days when we’re all on videoconferencing technology like Halo, flying is perhaps inevitable. That’s why law firm Arnold & Porter is taking the pathbreaking move of partnering with Carbonfund.org to make contributions based on the amount employees fly for business travel. The contributions will be used for renewable energy and reforestation projects in the U.S. and other parts of the world.

Slashing spewing-carbon-into-the-stratosphere business travel is a better move. But this is a terrific start.
