Last week I interviewed Clayton Christensen on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his classic book, The Innovator’s Dilemma. Christensen, one of the nicest business school professors you’ll ever meet, had some interesting things to say about better ways to measure innovation projects, where he was wrong in Dilemma, and why the iPhone is unlikely to be disruptive.
In preparing for the interview, I spoke to a few innovation professors—Patrick Whitney at IIT’s Institute of Design, Roger Martin at the Rotman School of Management, and Bob Sutton at Stanford—to get their thoughts on the impact of Christensen’s book over the years. All three were pretty universally enthusiastic about the book’s continued impact. It reminded me that the prolific Sutton—he’s written two books in the last year, The No Asshole Rule and Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths, and Total Nonsense: Profiting from Evidence-Based Management—maintains an especially good blog worth reading for ideas on good new books, interesting management ideas, and random oddities, such as why Southern men are both more civil and more aggressive when their honor is threatened ( this Georgia Peach would have to agree).
