TECHNOLOGY & EDUCATION DIGEST
Number 22--August 28, 1997
A Moderated Mailing List
Steve Wildstrom (steve_wildstrom@businessweek.com), Moderator

-------------------------------------------------------

Things have been pretty slow around Tech-Ed land lately, as those of us who aren't teachers enjoyed the dying days of August, while the teach-ers scrambled to get ready for the new year (which for some of you started this week and for nearly everyone else in the K-12 business will begin Tuesday.

The new year is sure to bring new issues of technology in education, so let's get those cards, letters, and especially e-mails rolling so we can breathe some fresh fall life into this list.

By the way, the Technology & You column in the upcoming issue of Busi-ness Week, posted at www.businessweek.com tonight, deals with graphing calculators. I'd be very interested in the thoughts of math and science people out there, either about the use of calculators in general or about specific models.

Best wishes to all for a successful 1997-98 school year and hope to hear from lots of you soon.

I would like to share information on an extremely powerful product just released to help elementary and secondary schools manage and develop a comprehensive intranet. I think this product is of particular value to the Tech-Ed users in that its purpose is to enable all teachers and ad-ministrators to be able to create intranet Web pages by choosing from pre-designed school templates and style sheets. Design work is accom-plished seamlessly within the Netscape web browser. The goal of the product was to make designing web pages as easy as browsing web pages. The product is a comprehensive out of the box school district intranet groupware solution.

Further information including an online demo is available at http://www.intraschool.com. I can be reached by email at jagoe@intranetcommunications.com or at (310) 793-1852. I have enclosed the following press release.

Sincerely,

Sarah G. Fuhrmann (watcomm@earthlink.net) writes:

Educators are looking for ways to use the Internet to help them bridge distances and improve communications and outreach. One available op-tion is "Sound IDEAS," a Windows-based conferencing software from New-Star Collaborative Technologies that allows as many as 32 users to share images and talk at the same time over the Internet. The only special equipment required is a modem and a sound card.

Schools in the St. Louis area are looking at Sound IDEAS to help them work with students on things like homework hotlines, foreign language training and English writing classes. Meanwhile, some preschool admin-istrators have looked at using it to communicate with their colleagues in other locations, for example to share lesson plans.

Any school or teacher interested in testing the technology firsthand can obtain the Point-to-Point version of Sound IDEAS free by contacting NewStar's Senior Vice President of Marketing, John Schweitzer, by email at jfschw@aol.com, by calling (314) 434-6600 ext. 108 or at NewStar's website, www.newstartech.com.
