Market Commentary


   3/30/01: Major equity indexes closed with modest gains after a very
   disappointing first quarter. The DJIA rose 0.8% to 9879, led by
   strength in American Express, a beneficiary of takeover speculation
   with financial giant Citigroup. NYSE breadth was strong at 20-10
   positive, while NASDAQ breadth was also positive at 23-15. The best
   performing S&P sectors included communication equipment, cellular,
   electronic instrumentation, and oil and gas refining. The weakest
   sectors included semiconductors, autos, and chemicals. /Arbeter
