Foreclosure filings in the U.S.—default notices, auction sale notices, and bank repossessions—were up 18% in January 2009 over a year earlier, the 37th consecutive month with a year-over-year increase, online site RealtyTrac reported on Feb. 12.

For the month, 274,399 properties entered foreclosure, a 10% decline from December. Nevada, California, and Arizona posted the highest foreclosure rates.
