Not long ago, we would have turned up our noses at anything that didn't promise fat, double-digit stock market gains. Now, after three miserable years of losses, the certain 4% or 5% in a bond looks like a recipe for growth. Well, the U.S. economy is probably not going to reprise the boom years anytime soon, but you can do better than 5%. And we can help you to that end.


Start by looking for opportunities within the BusinessWeek 50 in the preceding pages. Sure, it's based on past performance, but this section's Barker Portfolio handicaps 9 of the 50 that we think have a good chance of repeating their strong gains in the year ahead.
