John P. Surma Jr. has been Chief Executive Officer of United States Steel Corp., a steel manufacturer, since October 1, 2004 and its President since March 1, 2003. Mr. Surma served as Chief Financial Officer of United States Steel Corp. from December 31, 2001 to February 2003 and its Chief Operating Officer since June 1, 2003. From January 2002 to February 2003, he served as Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of United States Steel Corporation. He served as Assistant to the Chairman of USX Corporation from September 2001 to December 2001; President of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC, an energy firm, from January 2001 to April 2001; Senior Vice President - Supply & Transportation of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC from January 2000 to December 2000; President of Speedway Super America LLC, a petroleum product retailer and a wholly owned subsidiary of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC, from September 1998 to December 1999. Mr. Surma served a number of major companies in the steel, oil and gas, chemicals, mining and manufactured products industries, and later was designated as one of the firm's lead inventory accounting, mining industry and environmental services specialists. He earlier worked for Price Waterhouse LLP, joining the organization in 1976, promoted to manager in 1981, senior manager in 1985 and admitted to the partnership in 1987. He joined Marathon Oil Company in February, 1997 as Senior Vice President of Finance and Accounting and Senior Vice President, Finance and Administration since January 1998. In 1983, Mr. Surma participated in the President's Executive Exchange Program in Washington, D.C., where he served as executive staff assistant to the Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. He served in the Manchester, England, office of the Price Waterhouse United Kingdom firm during that same year. He serves as Chairman of the American Iron and Steel Institute, and is a member of the board of directors of the National Association of Manufacturers, and a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the International Iron and Steel Institute. He served as a Vice Chairman of United States Steel Corp. since March 1, 2003. He has been a Director of Calgon Carbon Corporation since July 2000, and is a Member of the Compensation Committee. He has been a Director of United States Steel Corp. since 2001 and has been an Independent Director of Mellon Financial Corporation since January 1, 2004. Mr. Surma is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Pennsylvania Business Roundtable and Board of Visitors for both the University of Pittsburgh's Katz Graduate School of Business and The Pennsylvania State University's Smeal College of Business. He received a BS degree in accounting from The Pennsylvania State University in 1976.
