Valero Energy

William E. Greehey has been the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Valero Energy Corp., a San Antonio, Texas-based company that refines, trades and markets oil and gas and manages natural gas transmission operations, since it was separated from its former parent in July 1997. Mr. Greehey serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Valero Natural Gas Company ("VNGC"), General Partner of Valero Natural Gas Partners LP. He quickly worked his way up through the ranks, and in 1973 he was appointed president and Chief Executive Officer of a Coastal subsidiary, Lo Vaca Gathering Co., which was facing bankruptcy. Mr. Greehey began his career working for Price Waterhouse and Exxon and then joined Coastal States Gas Corporation in 1963. Mr. Greehey directed Valero's growth into the largest intrastate natural gas pipeline system in Texas. He also oversaw the company's investment in a small crude oil refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas, that Valero has transformed into one of the most complex and technologically advanced refineries in the world and a leading producer of clean-burning fuels. In 1996, Mr. Greehey directed the spin-off of Valero's natural gas assets so that the company could focus on the growth of its refining business. Since 1997, Mr. Greehey has led aggressive acquisition and expansion initiatives that have made Valero the largest independent refining and marketing company in the United States, with nationwide refining operations and nearly 2 million barrels per day of refining capacity. Mr. Greehey served as Chief Executive Officer of Valero Energy's former parent since 1979 and Chairman of the Board since 1983. He retired from his position as Chief Executive Officer of Valero Energy in June 1996 but, upon request of the board, resumed this position in November 1996. Most recently, he served as President of Valero Energy from 1998 to January 2003. He has been the Chairman of the Board of Valero GP, LLC since January 1, 2002, effective with the acquisition of UDS by Valero Energy. Mr. Greehey has been Chairman of the Board of Valero GP, LLC (the managing general partner of Valero L.P.) since January 1, 2002. Mr. Greehey has been a Director of Valero Energy Corporation since 1979 and serves as its Chairman of Executive Committee. He has been a Director of Valero Natural Gas Company since its formation in 1982. He serves as a Director of Valero GP, LLC. Mr. Greehey is also a Director of Weatherford International Incorporated and Santa Fe Energy Resources, Inc., which are not affiliated with the Partnership or the General Partner. He served as a Director of Valero Energy's former parent since 1979. He served as a Director of Weatherford Enterra, Inc. since May 25, 1984. Mr. Greehey holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He earned Valero consistent rankings among the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" by Fortune Magazine and one of the "100 Best Managed Companies in the World" by IndustryWeek Magazine.
