Frederick W. Smith Frederick W. Smith has been President and Chief Executive Officer of FedEx Corp., a global transportation and logistics holding company that was formed when Federal Express Corporation acquired Caliber System Inc., since January 1998. Mr. Smith founded Federal Express in 1971 and served as a President of Federal Express Corporation from 1971 to 1975 and from 1983 to January 1998. Mr. Smith was Chief Executive Officer of Federal Express from 1977 to January 1998. Mr. Smith is responsible for providing strategic direction for all FedEx Corporation business units, including Federal Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Logistics, FedEx Custom Critical, and FedEx Trade Networks. Mr. Smith served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam from 1966 to 1970. Mr. Smith has been the Chairman of FedEx Corp. since January 1998. He has been the Chairman of Federal Express Corporation since 1975. He serves as a Director of Federal Express Corp. and FedEx Corp. He has been a Director of Value America Inc. since 1999. He has served on the boards of several large public companies. He is Co-chairman of the U.S. World War II Memorial Project. He was formerly chairman of the Board of Governors for the International Air Transport Association and the U.S. Air Transport Association. Smith is chair of the Business Roundtable's Security Task Force. He served as chairman of the U.S.-China Business Council and is the current chairman of the U.S.-France Business Council. He is also a director of the Business Roundtable, CATO Institute, Library of Congress James Madison Council and the Mayo Foundation. He attended Yale University, where he earned a B.A. in 1966. He was named Chief Executive magazine's 2004 "CEO of the Year."
