The BusinessWeek 50 Ranking

Boston Scientific

Boston Scientific got a lot of bad press last summer when it was forced to recall about 100,000 of its revolutionary new Taxus drug-coated coronary stents. But the trouble proved to be temporary as stent sales soared 345%, to $2.4 billion, helping earnings more than double. The reason: Most doctors believe Taxus cuts the odds that coronary arteries will reclog after angioplasty. But with the stock down from its peak over concerns about stent competition, the Natick (Mass.) company is spending heavily to expand into promising new businesses, such as spinal cord stimulation, which is used to help manage pain.
