Anadarko Petroleum

This wildcatter is settling down. A couple of years ago, when far-flung drilling projects produced dry holes and major acquisitions caused indigestion, Anadarko saw its costs balloon and returns shrivel. So Hackett tightened the Houston-based outfit's focus, selling $3.3 billion of older and costlier properties that represented about 20% of production and using proceeds to pay down debt and buy back shares. Earnings rose 29% last year. He's looking to sustain high single-digit production growth. Even deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is paying off after years of effort.
