Seton Hall is a small school with small classes that offer one on one experience and dive deeply into the core of business. In addition, because we are so close to New York City, it makes it more attractive because we are located in such great closeness to one of the best cities in the world that is overflowing with opportunity.
We have a very small program so it is very easy to get to know professors. At other schools the advisers and professors do not get to know many students on a first name basis but I have had the opportunity to create great relationships with my professors over my 4 years at Seton Hall.
I think if Seton Hall offered Co-ops or made internships mandatory to the business school the program would definitely be much stronger.
Our exposure to a plethora of companies, and the diversity of the student body is what makes Stillman unique. With such close proximity to New York and other cities, the business school has used this to their advantage and creates a strong network with employers. The diversity of the student body helps bring in some unique perspectives when discussing business related news, and case studies, and Stillman brings us together to do this.
I think that the school should be much more consistent in terms of its use of technology. Stillman prides itself on the use of technologies to enhance learning. However, there are still professors who insist on requiring students not to use laptops in the classroom.
Every business school is the same in terms of education. You can learn Accounting, Marketing, Finance etc anywhere. However, you are unable to obtain that polish one needs in order to be successful in the workforce. The opportunities to apply concepts learned and to meet with professionals is what sets the Stillman School apart. We are constantly given opportunities to network and learn from professionals. The Stillman Assessment allows us to apply the concepts we learned in class and gives us the opportunity to present before professionals as well. Through such experiences, Stillman students become prepared for the business world.
The program could be stronger if business students were given the opportunity to take a broader range of classes instead of just one or two in a specific area if it is not their desired concentration.
We have a very close community in the Business School. All of my professors, past and present, know me by name. I have had numerous conversations with the Dean, and I always feel that the faculty in the business school truly care about my success.
I feel like there needs to be a more rigorous set of qualifications for students looking to be admitted into the Stillman School of Business. This would allow for professors to challenge students more in the classroom. I feel like professors are hesitant to fully engage students due to the differences in student ability.
The people here are so welcoming and are willing to help you in anyway. The quality of teaching is so great and tends to challenge you every once in a while. The business school offers so many ways to get involve in organizations and opportunities to network at events.
I believe our business program would benefit from more mathematical courses. Seton Hall is now offering a Mathematical Finance major that is being implemented very soon. Unfortunately I was not able to partake in this new program but I believe I would be more prepared coming out of college if I had more exposure to math.
My program, especially the sport management program allows students to have a special expertise in the highly competitive sport industry. With specialized courses, we can have a leg above purely management or marketing majors. We have the basis as well as the specialization. The sport management program also requires that we have two internships in order to graduate. This requirement provides students with networking contacts for their future.
The overall teaching quality can be stronger. There are many teachers who are beyond exceptional; however, there are several teachers who did not teach the course material as effectively as I would have hoped. There were a few classes in which I performed way below my personal expectations because I was not able to understand the teachers' foreign accents. I found it difficult to approach those teachers because their expectations for their students were very high, and when I have got to them for help, I was rejected help because they did not understand me. And their parts of their tests covered material we never discussed in class. It was only two or three teachers in which this occurred, but the rest of the teachers were great.
The teachers are the best thing the school has going, with the career center being a close second. They are not only dedicated to academic education, but to the application of this learning.
