The business program is unique because of the networking opportunities offered to its students. By the time I graduate I will have built relationships with dozens of professionals in my industry as well hundreds of students who will also be taking jobs in the local community. This allows USD students to be fully integrated into the professional community long before we begin working in our career profession.
Career Services is fairly week and would need more staff to really help students with their job searches. Also, the connections to firms could be improved.
Our passport program makes sure all business students are well rounded and exposed to as much of the real world business world as possible. Small class sizes, no class (lower or upper division) are taught by teacher aids, Professors are always available for students.
They really need to add more quality faculty to their programs. The best professors have their classes fill up quickly so sometimes students have to wait a semester to take a class. However, They should not expand classes because the small class sizes are what make the school great.
The University of San Diego is unique in that it has engendered a high expectation of work ethic and active participation. In addition, the University of San Diego's Business Program labors over a curriculum that simulates real businesses and all business classes have group-project requirements. Participation in group projects is paramount and your ultimate success in the Business Department is dependent on how well you execute and manage your group-projects.
Our school needs to grow a bit, part of it is the facilities and the other part is the population. Enrollment would get a bump from improved athletics that would raise the overall quality of the admitted students and thus making the school better in the future.
We have small classes sizes, the teachers are always there to help you and try to get you to ask questions, they make all our studies applicable by doing case studies and presenting to actual companies. I have one on one relationships with my teachers and have had countless mentors that know me personally and want to help me with school and work searches. We also have great networking events where everyone there wants to help you.
The building that the business school is in is outdated. Many of professors' offices and classrooms are not located in the main building, but on another part of campus. It would be very beneficial to have the entire business school in the same area.
I think the most unique thing about our school's business is the emphasis on ethics and sustainability. Due to the Catholic background of the University, there is an emphasis on instilling social values into the students. There is a focus on not only growth and profits within business, but the value of community service & outreach and sustainable business.
I am graduating in the spring 2013 and i still feel like i am unprepared for the real world. I would like to see more real world situations in classes maybe with projects or talk about current events in class because I feel like that is something I am very naive about. Also talking about resumes and interviews and how to handle money after college are very important things that I believe should be offered in classes and not just extra events you have the option of going too. As a student athlete, it's very hard to make these events when our practices are during the same time. So I’d like to see more classroom discussion about these things so everyone can have the opportunity to learn it.
Our school has worked hard to bring in amazing people to work for career services that provide wonderful resources for the business students. Every week there are representatives from several different companies that are brought in to speak to students. Also our weekly email with job opportunities is also a wonderful resource. USD is highly respected in the San Diego community and local companies are more than willing to hire students that have just graduated.
I think the program could be made stronger by more outreach to students to use all the opportunities available such as resume workshops, skills workshops, and networking events. The University has many great events and opportunities available but a lot of times, students are just not aware of them.
Our professors are always available to help students. Generally, from my experience, most of the professors make themselves available as much as possible. For example, I could ask a professor for help in a class he/she isn't even teaching. Their knowledge is well-rounded.
I think our business program could be stronger if we take classes (or groups of people) and work on bigger projects. Projects in class are somewhat productive. However, sometimes the experiences you receive from them are nothing like the "real world". (and I don't like to use that terminology because I believe we are living in the real world). I think students receive more experience when projects draw students away from the school atmosphere. For example, in my Business Leadership class, we went rock climbing as a class to teach "teamwork". There, I felt as though people really bonded.
USD's business program teaches us how to learn and adapt. It focuses on the triple bottom line: people, planet, profit. The professors and program encourage students to be successful, but remember to give back to our communities and environment.
