This school just has an amazing atmosphere. Things like the cluster (integrated business semester) and the difficulty of classes make the College of Business challenging, but its people and environment truly make it special. Everyone wants to help everyone else, and we have a great group of student organizations that challenge their members and each other. It truly is an environment of hard work, matched with fun and collaboration.
Sometimes I wish the faculty showed more attention to students that weren't in business organizations. Sometimes I get the feeling that the faculty only cares about those that give back or highly involved in college of business workings. I am a member of a social fraternity and sometimes I feel alienated or looked down upon by the faculty. I feel that if the advising and career help was better Ohio University would be almost perfect. The advisers often times aren't truly there to help.
Our college of business has a program required of all students known as the integrated business cluster, where you take classes in each aspect of business and apply those to live client consulting projects in random teams over the course of a semester. Our School of Accounting teaches all of the intermediate accounting classes through the Business Activity Model, rather than traditional lecture. This is a model that forces you to learn the material and apply it each year to a business that you follow throughout your college career and after each financial year end the professors will teach you what you should have done and why it is correct.
I think the thing that will make the program stronger is something that is currently underway. The College of Business now has a leadership center. While we already had groups that promote leadership, this center will transform how our college and university pursues it. The college has brought in some top corporate talent to teach classes and run the center, and I think it is one of the most exciting things that our university is doing on the whole.
Ohio University's undergraduate business program is unique because we have phenomenal extracurricular opportunities available to us as students. The alumni that come out of our extracurricular programs stay in frequent contact with current students and do a fantastic job at exposing us to potential employers. In addition, the school places an emphasis on working in teams and groups in what is known as the "business cluster."
Improve on the advising situation. My personal experience with advising has often times left me confused with which classes I have to complete in order to graduate. Also the transition from the quarter system to semesters was handled in a sloppy manner.
The opportunities for unique extracurricular activities to help you develop your technical, leadership, and all around teamwork skills. My accounting program was world class also, with a comprehensive soft and hard skill preparation. We have strong accounting, sales, and MIS departments with Fantastic opportunities in Strategic leadership and entrepreneurship.
I believe that the program should be larger to include more students and thus expand on the diversity. Also, a larger emphasis should be placed on the MIS department and it should be recommended that students take it as an additional major. I began as a finance major and then picked up the MIS major after taking one class, and it has been a decision that has truly changed myself as a professional.
It is small enough to receive individual attention from your professors, but it is also large enough that numerous opportunities are always being created. Throughout my time here, the professors have been willing to help in any way that they can, and I have been able to join numerous College of Business Student Organizations.
The advising could be a little bit stronger. We have elected to go for group advising over one-on-one which, for me, I did not like because I preferred to sit down and map out each quarter/semester. I was able to meet up with my advisor before I scheduled but We had to find times during the day to meet up
I think the business program is unique because it offers a great deal of experience along with the course material. I have had the ability to work for real clients and gain some real experience in my classes. I have had the ability to work in groups and give presentations that mimic the real world. The real life experience I have gained has been much been a great reinforcement of the material taught.
Our finance program could be better, and a portion of the business student body could be more engaged in the fantastic extracurriculars we have to offer.
The network of Ohio University Alumni is outstanding. I've had the privilege of meeting many proud alum and learning from each one's unique professional experience. All are more than willing to give you a helping hand when searching for a job.
