What separates this program from the rest is the faculty, collaboration work, and practical real world experiences learned in class. My professors were extremely accomplished in their respective practice. Also the majority of my classes involve intensive team projects that mirror the type of work that we will be doing upon graduation.
I think Kelley needs to weed out the applicants to the b-school more quickly. I took way too many classes sophomore year with students still applying to the school. These students were obviously not going to make the cut and were dragging down the experience of those already admitted.
You join a family when you become a student at Indiana. People here work together and have goals that align with each other. The career services program is extremely helpful for finding career opportunities, and I would say it rivals that of any college. Also, the business school is the center-point of IU, and the administration makes sure to attract the very best.
The program needs to develop ways to keep students engaged in their education over all four years. I have encountered many students who do not care about their education once they have made it through iCore. This lack of motivation has a negative influence on all juniors and seniors. It is very stressful to complete class projects when half of one's team refuses to work. While I am not sure how to fix the problem or if it is an issue that pops up on other campuses, it is something that the Kelley administration must look into.
Kelley does a great job of creating a curriculum that focuses on building essential skills, teamwork, and the ability to learn and adapt to a changing business environment. Kelley is still changing and adapting the requirements for the new classes to prepare them for the work experience they desire.
One thing Kelley could improve on is working on written communication. The only times we do any written reports is for some major projects in a couple classes. The main focus is on the oral presentations
One thing that makes the Kelley School of Business unique is the great amount of emphasis, time, and resources committed to securing Kelley grads with jobs. Since getting a job is everyone's top priority upon graduation, Kelley understands this importance.
Kelley doesn't focus enough on local business. All of the Kelley recruiting is for the really big corporations. I wish that they connected with more Indianapolis entrepreneurs; everyone loves Kelley and knows of their reputation. I think that we should utilize the community. On some level, that happens, because Kelley has close ties with Target, which is headquartered here in Indiana. However, I think that Kelley has the opportunity to do that with smaller businesses.
The Kelley School of Business has an entire semester dedicated to what's called Integrative Core. During the semester, students take four linked classes: operations, strategy, finance, and marketing. At the end of the semester, students are assigned the I-Core case. The I-Core case brings together a group of five and their task is to complete a large report in ten days. The report utilizes concepts learned from each of the four components from the semester. It's challenging but one of the best experiences I've had.
Increasing the selectivity could make the business program stronger. Since Indiana University is a public institution, is it difficult to decrease the size of each incoming Kelley class. But, by providing the best and brightest with more selective opportunities to grow and learn, Kelley can continue competing with other top business programs.
I think what is unique about Kelley is that although there are may students in the program, the program still impresses me with how open the professors are to meet one on one. I have met with many teachers multiple times, and I am confident that the professors genuinely care about their students. I also like that many of the students I am around are very intelligent and I feel I am continually pushed by the other students to do well.
The grading system is lackluster; it does not show the actual knowledge and skill level that is achieved by students. I also believe that this time in history is strange for developing college students with the transition into the digital age. Academia will see great changes in the following 10 years, and I believe we are right before the changes occur.
We have an amazing Undergraduate Career Services Office. I would pay the amount I paid in tuition just to have access to the resources the UCSO has given me. It is a truly valuable service and the entire office is available to help you at most hours of the day. They have made my life so much easier in helping me prepare for a job and in searching for a job.
I think an English proficiency test could help the program. There are many international students, which provide great diversity, but it has been difficult to work in groups with students who do not speak English well.
Kelley combines outstanding teacher quality, job recruiting help, and the brightest student body in a small town, Midwest setting. We have the background and training necessary to succeed but come from humble Midwest roots.
