Our proximity to the financial capital of the world contributes greatly to the caliber of our business program. We are taught by professors who have come from real world positions in great financial companies, and they are often still working in the field. We are able to attend a multitude of networking events both on and off campus because business professionals have easy access to our campus and we have easy access to New York City. We are easily able to commute to work in the city and are encouraged to intern throughout the school year, possible because of our location.
I think the attendance policy should be dropped. Even though Fordham has some outstanding professors, many Fordham students do have jobs and internships and are bright enough to learn the subject material in their own free time outside of the classroom.
Business program is unique in that we are based in the Jesuit tradition, taught to think independently and for society as a whole. Ethical concerns are woven into every course, and Professors are very open to questioning the norms and thinking outside the box. Located in the Bronx, we have a strong sense of those less fortunate than ourselves and are given the opportunities to reach out to help. We are prepared to be leaders in our future careers in the lifestyles that we manage (balancing very involved internships with heavy loads of classes) and the people we meet and become (caring, passionate, open-minded).
Making a mandatory work-study program for one semester to work with a partnered company in the field of each students' major would make our program stronger. I have had nine internships and I believe interning, coupled with my education, has given me an advantage over other future job candidates. I strongly believe that mandating internship and real world experience will add to the education we are receiving.
The Gabelli School of Business focuses on creating a whole person, not just a business person. There's a large liberal arts emphasis and good quality of education. Being located in NYC doesn't hurt -- year round internships.
The business program could improve by offering classes on a few more days and times. It is sometimes hard to organize a schedule if you are also working because some required courses are not offered as much.
Fordham provides a business curriculum that is well rounded and inclusive. They also seek to provide students with strong applicable managerial skills
What could make the program stronger is by having a requirement that everyone study abroad. We live in such a global society, I think all business students should be able to study in some other country. There should be more Fordham Campuses internationally.
Its new business program allows for group projects that involves people to be in the same group for several classes. Sophomore year, we are assigned a company that we use for the projects in the different classes. We get great teamwork experience and are constantly challenged.
The only thing that could make our business school stronger is a more concentrated curriculum in major classes. For finance, Fordham only requires 10 classes and some of the more important classes for the finance major are pushed back until your senior year, when recruiting for jobs has already happened.
Fordham's business program is unique because the professors and advisors take an interest in each student's success. A great advantage of Fordham's business school is that it is small in size, so every student has the ability to get the assistance and attention they need as long as they take advantage of the resources available to them.
There could be better advising for students. Class sizes for required classes should be smaller by offering more classes. Some professors could talk more about current events and situations, but most do.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION. Yes, another cliché, but it is simply true. This is the only school where I can take the train from CT down to Grand Central, walk over to 6th Ave., spend the day on our trading desk at Merrill, and take a 19 minute train back to one of the most beautiful campuses in the world for night class. You can also fit in 3-4 hours of interning work between classes if so because of the location. Other schools provide, but none with a "suburban", gated, campus like Fordham.
The amount of companies that recruit on campus lack diversity. Typically they are recruiting for only general finance or accounting.
Fordham's Gabelli School of Business is most certainly unique. Wherein the past Fordham has been over-shadowed by the likes of NYU and Columbia, in the present I find myself not only competing for, but securing internships over both NYU and Columbia students. The ability to stand side-by-side with a Stern student proves the Gabelli School of Business is achieving more each year, and this makes me proud to be a Ram.
