Our business program is unique due to three different factors: the curriculum, the small class size, and the professors. The curriculum allows for each student to gain a wide breadth of business knowledge. The small class size allows for students to better interact with each other, to participate in class, and to have an interactive learning environment. The professors bring both practical and theoretical knowledge to each class. Many of the professors have worked extensively within their area of expertise or are still working in their industry area. This allows professors to take concepts taught in class and apply them to real world examples. The professors also work to create a class environment that encourages participation and interactive learning. Finally, the professors are very willing to meet with students at different times outside of class.
Although the professors in the Daniels College of Business are very knowledgeable and have great experience, I believe that their teaching skills could be improved. I see the value of professors with fantastic industry experience, but they sometimes struggle with adequately conveying their knowledge to students. I would also encourage diversity training for all professors. Although ethics is one of the program's strongest values, many professors fail to see the inextricable connection between ethics and being culturally competent.
The location of the university is what makes it the most unique. The school is located near enough the city so students can easily go downtown Denver and experience all its culture and food. The school is also near the Rockies so over break or even the weekend students can take a quick trip to the mountains.
I think more emphasis on learning rather than getting good grades would make the business program stronger. I see and hear all these students so worried about getting a good grade instead of truly learning the material that they will cram all the material just to forget it after the exam.
The Hospitality program within the Daniels Business School is amazing. They are constantly e-mailing us about job/internship opportunities and are always bringing in people from the industry to teach us and to talk with us about future job opportunities.
Our accounting program is very strong with bringing in firms for them to interview with and job placement; however, none of the other majors have any help like that. If as much emphasis was put in other areas as well it would be much stronger.
The study abroad program was outstanding. Traveling abroad was the best experience. Additionally the Professors were excellent.
More variety and flexibility in classes would be nice, and the school should be more aggressive with creating networking opportunities for students for to find internships/jobs at top quality firms.
It is very competitive and intense, given the quarter schedule. Also, there is a very strong emphasis on teamwork and group projects, as well as small class sizes and one-on-one interactions with professors.
The university should be more selective in letting students in. While I believe the caliber has increased even in the four years I have been at DU, I think that there's still a long way to go. Further, I have rated job placement well, but that was largely driven by my own ambition and ability to seek out the requisite resources. That said, relatively few elite firms recruit out of DU, and I would like to see that change.
Each of my business professors had vast experiences in the business world that were not only inspiring, but that created connections for us as students. DU works to make sure that we are successful after college by providing a plethora of on and off campus business activities and opportunities.
The business program could be made stronger by providing greater depth into each class of the core curriculum. Required classes in the business program provide a good overview of each subject, but greater depth into each subject outside of one's major would be useful.
I think the fact that we are required to take at least one class in every major of the business school and the fact that their are small class sizes make the business program unique. The small class sizes allows for the students to work together well, feel comfortable speaking up, and allows us to get to know the professors better. I also think that our program is unique in the caliber of the professors, I have yet to have one professor in the business school that isn't passionate about teaching and wanting their students to succeed.
