Fuqua is an incredibly diverse institution with outstanding professors, strong caliber students and a focus on teamwork and the goal of becoming a future leader of consequence. This all comes in a package with a fantastic location. Duke has the perfect blend of "southern" style and living (lower costs, friendly residents, beautiful weather, amazing food) with world-class business opportunities (RTP is right in our backyard) and a rich history (NCAA Championships at Duke and UNC, Civil War, Raleigh's founding, etc.). Having lived in the Northeast the majority of my life, including 6 years in NYC, I was blown away by how much there was to do and how easy it was to acclimate to southern living.
I think there could be additional resources (ie., more tutors, more frequent review sessions) offered during the core courses, particularly accounting and finance, for people who come into Fuqua with limited backgrounds in these areas.
The students attracted to Duke make it and excellent place to learn and grow. The cohort there is tremendously diverse in terms of background and interest. The atmosphere is also very collegial and supportive; it lacks the internal competition that is present at other top institutions. And the opportunities for career and personal are great.
The student body can, at times, be a little too party-oriented and immature. This is only a bad thing when it impacts the classroom and, unfortunately, sometimes it does - in the form of a lack of classroom preparation/participation and non-constructive contributions to classroom discussion. Perhaps increasing the average age of entrants or increasing the percentage of students with families might help.
Very strong, fast paced, short terms during the first year (Core Terms). It will certainly take anyone of their comfort zone and already result in an increased efficiency for the student. A real Teamwork environment (Team Fuqua) and the high percentage of international students, which increases and enhances the exchange of personal and professional experience.
More resources need to be diverted to the career services office. Fuqua tends to attract extremely accomplished and driven students who attract great companies to the school and do the work it takes to land the best jobs. However, Fuqua has somewhere near 45% international students, and career services needs to do much more to help these students adjust to US recruiting & business standards. Additionally, I am not sold on Fuqua's expansion abroad - specifically, building foreign campuses. While I think an international education is extremely important (Fuqua's diversity was a selling point for me), I think resources would be better spent fostering the Daytime & Executive programs in Durham, with emphasis on international partnerships rather than stretching resources too far on a risky, brand-diluting international experiment."
The team-focused nature of the Duke MBA far surpasses anything that I've heard about at other business schools. Also, "Fuqua personality" is unique: the program is incredibly diverse but there are common threads of humility, amicability and approachability. Team Fuqua genuinely likes one another-- and it really shows.
We need more aggressive people running our career management center. CMC seems to be not doing anything to bring in companies from variety of industries besides healthcare. Also, I would like to see more job functions hiring on campus besides marketing and consulting.
I consider Duke the Fuqua School of business unique for its (1) high level professors and classes, (2) very international environment and (3) teamwork
We have placed a sharp focus on building the school to become a global school, and it seems it's making progress on multiple fronts (including the opening of China campus in 2013); however, I believe the school could do more to provide more global practicum and exchange opportunities, while strengthening global discussions in the classroom.
Duke's emphasis on teamwork and collaboration in the workplace has prepared me well for the realities of a management position in a multinational company. In a world where the ability to clearly and concisely communicate your ideas and contributions to a wide range of people is increasingly important, Duke has put in place the resources necessary for each individual to strengthen his own ability to successfully interact with others.
I would love if the school had more institutional memory and did not have to rely on students to pass on information about clubs/job search tips to each successive class.
Fuqua has a unique culture and energy that is present from Blue Devil (admitted students) weekend all the way through graduation.
Faculty and staff could hold students even more accountable for not taking the academic portion of school seriously enough. We should stop babying people and start really pushing people to be great.
Team Fuqua is unparalleled in the MBA landscape. We learn to work in teams from the outset and we build on those skills in every aspect of life at business school. When we go to events with other schools, it is obvious that we work better in teams than everyone else.
