Babson's entrepreneurial focus does two things that make it unique: 1) The classes are framed in an entrepreneurial mindset and a 'can-do' attitude, and 2) It draws students from a very wide and varied background, and are looking to enter a wider variety of career than other schools, creating learning opportunities from classmates that I do not believe are possible in a traditional MBA school.
Babson needs more coherence in its curriculum and more emphasis on matching students with opportunities after graduation.
The school is small therefore teaching and class discussions are more personal. The experience and faculty at Babson really prepare you to become an entrepreneur, more so than the other institutions out there.
Career services needs to raise its game and establish its identity. Is it a job search center or merely a resume review and career advice center? There are too many free loaders and unprofessional people in the career services team. Babson isn't a target school for any reasonably well-known consulting or finance firm, and that is not a reflection on the quality of the students, who are top-notch with extensive work experience. Often, it is easier to use one's personal network than to approach an organization through Career Services. There are several fluff metrics reported by career services to demonstrate that progress is being made, but there is a severe disconnect between their representation and on-ground student placements.
Entrepreneurship is emphasized constantly in the curriculum, not only in the number of courses specializing in small businesses, but also through the context in which all other courses are taught. Professors emphasize how management decisions will affect "the company you own," not simply "the department you lead."
The Financial acumen of the student body as a whole was lacking and could have been stronger and more integrated throughout the course materials. Holding students more accountable for the knowledge that is presented would also increase the strength of the students education.
The students are all unique, driven and passionate people. They are not afraid to get dirty and are all willing to do what it takes and to help others get ahead. We aren't a typical business school and we aren't typical business students. This drive, problem solving and ability to deal with ambiguity defines a Babson MBA.
The student body is often undisciplined and academically weak. This is particularly evident in the international student body, in which students often seem to be admitted for their potential to become future donors, not academically gifted colleagues.
Babson College is the only college to prepare entrepreneurs for both corporate and startup environments. In order of importance in the world of leadership is: 1)Entrepreneurs, 2)Leaders, and 3)Managers. Only Babson College teaches the skills necessary for all three positions throughout the entire MBA curriculum.
Babson focuses on one single topic, when there is so much talent in the rest of their offerings. They need to promote the Culter Center and their ability to teach students quantitative skills. It's all there, it's just not marketed. The Career Development group has some truly wonderful people working there like Healthcare, but others are sub-par, like financial services.
The Babson MBA students love to learn and focus on the legacy they want to leave in the world. The diversity of the student body from ethnicity to experience creates a great community for learning that I did not find in any other MBA program.
I think they could do a better job of weeding out some of the dead weight. I really didn't understand why a lot of my classmates were there when they showed little interest in any of the classes or work.
Babson does an incredible job of finding a unique set of students that have a holistic background that is well versed as well as willing and able to create a teamwork environment instead of a constant competitive environment. Everyone is willing and able to give a helping hand to classmates and the bond created here will last lifetimes. The students are very smart and very entrepreneurial in every way. The entrepreneurship approach to an MBA at Babson cannot be beat at any other school. It's how this school is entirely different than others. I am so fortunate that I made the right decision and I've learned so much in such a short amount of time both professionally, educationally, and personally.
