-The Illinois MBA allows students to study at a top-notch research institution with the finest faculty. The curriculum provides a solid foundation from which I know I can/will build on.
-The Illinois MBA program would be a fantastic choice for most people due to its low cost, flexible curriculum, and wealth of extracurricular opportunities for professional development. The hiring companies are also great--AT&T, P&G, Cisco, etc.--and those with strong resumes seem very competitive with other nearby schools like Ohio State, Indiana, and Northwestern. The only drawback is the distance from major hiring centers like Chicago, Indianapolis, or St. Louis, so some travel may be required for interviews.
-The students in the full-time MBA program are underwhelming. The students are narrow minded, intellectually lazy, and neither socially nor academically interesting. The faculty and administration alike take a “check the block” approach at best, and entirely omits areas of instruction at worst. As an example of an omission, while the MBA program purports to have a robust marketing program, but for years they had no Marketing professor and arranged an elaborate “smoke and mirrors” arrangement with other universities to offer de minimus instruction in Marketing. There is no academic rigor. The faculty, professors, and staff -- both directly and through student leadership -- encourage students to give glowing and untruthful evaluations of the MBA program so that the program can score well in the rankings.
-With a new MBA administration, the MBA program is now the focus of the College of Business.Every change which has happened in the last 1 year of the new administration has been for the better. The only weak point was career services and with that being merged with the College of Business career services, I am sure the job statistics will change remarkably from next year onwards.
-As a permanent resident I found out that UIUC is very open to international students. Also, the small size of the program was very beneficial for me.
-The addition of the a new dean has already made the program make great strides in becoming a top MBA program. I am fully confident the new dean will make the Illinois MBA a prominent program once again.
-The Illinois MBA program has a strong mix of students with a wide array of backgrounds. Each class has an approximate mix of forty percent international students. There are a few students who have directly entered straight from undergraduate. The mix of business knowledge and experience across different sectors is exceptional. In a shrinking world, being able to have the opportunity to interact with many students who will be leaders throughout the world will benefit me in my future endeavors.
-The career services department was of absolutely no help to international students. I do understand that, being an international student, the onus of finding a job is on me, but i would expect career services to be involved.
-The school's network pushed students toward Chicago. I would recommend this school if they planned on a career in this city.
-The biggest knock on the Illinois MBA program is poor networking with Illinois alumni. In recent history, the Illinois College of Business's name and fame have not carried over to its MBA program. Although, I do believe drastic changes are underway. Leaders of the Illinois MBA program do realize their prior mistakes. A new marketing campaign and stronger efforts to improve alumni relations should substantially bolster the program's career services department.
-The MBA experience at the U of I gets enriched by the vast amount of resources available at the university. The fact that one is free to take up any course in any school in the university make it even better. Basically, I get to design my MBA in case I am not interested in the standard concentrations the program offers. I benefited the most from this as I designed my MBA and got the exact job I wanted even in this depressed economy.
