Comments from Student 1:
Modular Two Year Part Time MBA at Henley Management College(HMC) in the United Kingdom.
Scheduling the Interview: I scheduled the interview through HMC's' admissions officer in the UK. At the time I was working in Hong Kong. I generally used the email to communicate due to time zone differences however the odd phone call was necessary to iron out the finite details. On the whole HMC were very helpful. The duration between agreeing the interview time and conducting the interview was around three weeks.
Location of Interview: Normal practice for HMC is for interviews to be undertaken in the UK at the college, however as I was in HK and HMC have a HK office we scheduled the interview in Hong Kong.
HMC's office in located in the heart of one of Hong Kong's nightspots. I chose for the interview to be held during the morning, as I did not want to be tempted by any distractions on the way to the interview!
Preparedness of Interviewer: One of the first comments the interviewer made after I entered the room was that my references were very good and my referees clearly thought very highly of me. This was a welcomed complement and helped me feel a little more at ease with the proceedings. I did not need to reinvent any of the information already at the disposal of HMC, although I did have to enhance what I had mentioned in the application and provide evidence in some instances.
Interviewer University affiliation: I was interviewed by Dr Thomas Tang. Dr Thomas Tang works as a lecturer for HMC and is also alumni.
Questions asked: All questions and responses were exchanged in seamless conversation. This certainly suited my preferred style of interview. Questions were delivered in a clear and concise way and generally related to my personal and professional experiences.
The questions I remember are: Why have you chosen to undertake your MBA at HMC?
Describe an event at work where you managed to change something.
How did you manage the relationship with your superiors where you instigated this change?
Describe the macro economic issues associated with KCRC West Rail. (KCRC West Rail is a major rail infrastructure scheme in Hong Kong. I worked on one the projects forming this scheme during the construction phase).
Length of Interview: The interview took around one hour. By the time I had departed the building I was exhausted! The intense concentration for that hour had taken its toll.
Additional Comments: Dr Thomas Tang had previously undertaken his MBA at HMC and so I was able to ask some specific questions about the course material and his experiences.
I asked him about any pre-course reading. His response surprised me when he said that no one had asked this question before.
I handed him a list of books that had been suggested in one of the web sites I had been browsing but he did not know any of them.
He did however recommend reading The Economist. I immediately went to the local news stand after the interview and bought my first copy. I am now a subscriber and find it a fascinating read.
