MBA INSIDER: ADMISSION INTERVIEW TIPS HEC: The Interview
Comments from Student 1:
HEC employs a two-step admissions process. The first step involves submitting an application (online, in my case). If a candidate piques the interest of the Admissions Jury, he/she moves to the second round. At this point, the candidate is invited to interview with members of the Jury (in Paris or the nearest metro area with HEC alums). In its application, HEC clearly specifies a two-week window for interviewing (based on your "round"). Candidates are urged to make themselves available during this period. To have a greater impact on the Jury, I decided to interview in Paris, instead of Miami, D.C., or New York. To offset the "price of admission," I planned a Euro vacation coinciding with interviews. The administration was very responsive: I submitted my application on January 10th and interviewed on January 24th. As you can see, this process was straightforward and streamlined. The HEC interview was unique. Interviewees give a 10-minute presentation, on any topic of their choice, before two members of the Jury. Twenty minutes of Q&A follows the presentation. At the discretion of "a higher power," candidates may be required to present a second time (to two new Jurors). My presentation on was well received, and once was enough for [the Jury] (it was after 5:30 p.m. on a Friday)! Incidentally, my interview was conducted entirely in English (because I'm attending the English section). Although I don't remember specific questions, my interview clearly focussed on two areas: (1) Why did I want to study in France/Europe, and how would it help me to attain my goals? (2) What did I know about French culture? They wanted to know whether I'd just fallen off the "haricots verts" truck.
