MBA INSIDER: SAMPLE APPLICATION ESSAYS Manchester Business School: Essay 1 QUESTION: Describe a past experience where you have been strongly motivated to complete a goal.
I had desired to gain an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan (U-M) for as long as I could remember. However, when I initially applied for entry into U-M's general undergraduate degree course, I was rejected. The rejection letter stated that "…it is unlikely you would have academic success at our institution…". Although being denied by U-M was devastating, I refused to hang my head and instead turned my disappointment into motivation. My goal was to prove that I was indeed a strong student and that I could have academic success at U-M or any other institution of higher education for that matter. So, I attended Eastern Michigan University (EMU) to start my undergraduate career. By the end of two years at EMU, I was in the top of my class, had been selected to EMU's 'Honors Program' for study in economics, and had earned a scholarship.
After my two years at EMU I again applied for entry into U-M. However, this time I was not simply applying to U-M's general undergraduate degree course. Rather, I was applying to U-M's very competitive and nationally lauded renowned undergraduate business degree program. The vast majority of students already attending U-M would not be qualified to gain entry into this degree program. However, because of what I had achieved at EMU, I was accepted to U-M's extraordinarily selective program as one of only 20 transfer students (of the 300 total students) to be admitted. I continued to work hard once at U-M. I graduated from U-M in the top portion of an extremely strong group of fellow students and subsequently achieved one of the longest held goals in my life.
