MBA INSIDER: SAMPLE APPLICATION ESSAYS Notre Dame (Mendoza): Essay 1 QUESTION: Discuss your post-MBA career plans. In particular, describe the first MBA position you plan to pursue. Explain how your past experiences or personal characteristics make this position a good career choice for you?
After I complete my MBA degree from the University of Notre Dame I will pursue a career in consulting with, IBM, traditionally a hardware company that is recently growing it services business; Pricewaterhouse Coopers; or Accenture, formerly Arthur Andersen. The position will be challenging and include local and regional travel. I will be able to apply my skills learned during my graduate experience to make an immediate impact. I will have the opportunity to interact with managers from various industries; transportation; technology; and non-profit organizations. My experience and study at Notre Dame will help me chose an area of emphasis. My areas of interest are finance and entrepreneurship.
After I have landed a consulting position I plan to find a permanent residence within 150 miles of South Bend and start a family with my wife [deleted]. We are both from the Detroit area and would like to find a residence near the areas where we have spent so much time developing our careers, friendships, and bonds with our family. We want to give our future children the opportunity to grow up within this support network. [Deleted] completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan and I completed my undergraduate studies at Michigan State University. We want to be involved in the communities of South Bend, East Lansing, and Metro Detroit after I complete my degree. In the last six years I have had several extraordinary experiences that would make this career a good fit. However, I have a few personal characteristics that have led me to this career choice and that will ultimately allow me to be successful. First, I posses a confidence, not egoism, that prepares me for success. Some of my peers perceive this confidence as risk taking. Let me explain. Two years after graduation I voluntarily left my position with [deleted]. Two months later I moved to [deleted] with only my mountain bike, a portable radio, five days of worth of business dress, some money and ambition. My friends perceived this as risky. Instead, I planned carefully and executed my plan. First, I saved some money and tendered my resignation. Next, I visited cities high on my relocation list. I set my sights on Denver and one particular company, [deleted]. I looked up [deleted] on Yahoo and found a number for investor relations. It was an odd point of entry but I tried it anyway. I spoke with the person in charge of investor relations and convinced her I needed to speak to human resources. She transferred me to the director of human resources! I asked him if they were hiring in the IT department and he said "No." I called him back the next day and asked the right question, "Where are you hiring?" [Deleted] was hiring in the provisioning and customer service departments. I would send my resume to [deleted] and set up an interview for the next week. I loaded up my truck and headed for Denver. I spent the first night in [deleted]. I set the alarm for 8a.m., got dressed in my best suit and made it to Denver by 5p.m. in time for my interview. I remember talking with the recruiter, [deleted], months later. [Deleted] said she was very impressed how I presented myself after driving so far. I got the job! I set a goal and achieved it. Leaving your comfort zone is risky but I knew I could do it. Now I am that much more sure that my new goals will be achieved. Moving west was something I had to prove to myself. I had a comfortable middle-class life where some doors were opened for me. Finally, I had opened my own. Now I have to set my sights on my next goals. Attending the University of Notre Dame, working with one of the three companies mentioned above, and starting a family near my home of Detroit. I am ready to achieve my goals now that I have set them. With my confidence and ambition I see how I can succeed, don't you?
