During the course of my Master's research in pharmacology, my supervisor, along with three other pharmacology professors, formed a start-up company aimed at identifying drugs useful in the treatment of strokes. I became interested in this venture, and I often spoke to my supervisor about the progress that the company was making. He expressed frustration at a communication gap experienced between the professors and the business people during various stages of the financing process. He acknowledged that the professors were not familiar with all of the concerns expressed by the representatives of the venture capital firms and pharmaceutical strategic alliance teams with which they were negotiating. Furthermore, the professors felt that the strong scientific principles of their work were not being fully appreciated by the business people. I knew from this point forward that a career combining business with the health sciences would be ideal for me.

I have developed a strong knowledge in the health sciences and pharmacology through my education and my work experience as a forensic scientist. Through this experience, I have also acquired excellent problem solving, integrative, interpersonal, and communication skills. I believe that at this point in my life, these skills will allow me to realise the maximum educational benefit from the LBS MBA. This combination of scientific experience and business training will help me to make an informed and influential contribution to a Pharmaceutical, a Start-up, or a Venture Capital company.

I expect that the LBS MBA will best help me to develop the business foundation necessary for me to achieve my career goals. I have met a number of alumni from LBS, all of whom have emphasised the spirited, co-operative, and team-based qualities of both academic and social life while on the MBA. This is the type of environment in which I learn and work best. Many businesses approach projects with a similar team based strategy. I will benefit from practical experience working in this type of environment. My MBA experience will also be enhanced because LBS and the city of London attract people with varying business and international experiences. Furthermore, working groups, small class sizes, and a case-based approach to teaching will provide me with the opportunity to learn more from my classmates. Additionally, the fact that LBS recognises the importance of the summer internship and term projects is extremely important to me, because I will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the pharmaceutical industry.

If I were not offered a place in any MBA program, I would spend the next year examining my MBA application, determining how I could make it more competitive, doing whatever necessary to make it more competitive and re-applying to business school. If my applications were again unsuccessful, my career goals would not change, but would become more difficult to attain. I would use my scientific background to join a pharmaceutical company and learn about this particular industry from the inside. Eventually, I would hope to progress toward a leadership position in strategic alliances.
