MBA INSIDER: SAMPLE APPLICATION ESSAYS Georgia (Terry): Essay 1 QUESTION: Please share with the admissions committee any unique events, life experiences, and qualifications that you feel distinguish your candidacy and that will add value to the class and enhance your success as a manager.
There are several key qualifications that set me apart from other candidates and the qualifications listed below will add value to my MBA class and enhance my success in all of my future endeavors. The principle qualification that guarantees my success is my ambition and dedication to achieving my goals. Anyone who is passionate about what they do will be a success. I am very passionate about my current work, [deleted], and have done very well thus far in my career. I have created my own department at my advertising agency and have doubled [deleted] billings for the past two consecutive years. I was also asked to write a case study for the Direct Marketing Association. This is a huge accomplishment for me. I am determined to get accepted into business school and to acquire my MBA at the University of Georgia. A MBA will catapult me into a job as a brand manager that will give me the foundation I will need to manage a global fashion design company. As for contributing to my classes, my determination to get projects done will benefit my group members as well. I'm a go-getter and my ambition rubs off on people around me and inspires them to be a better person.
The second factor that will ensure my success is my creativeness and my people skills. I use creative thinking on a daily basis to solve problems and I treat people with respect and consideration. I do my best to fully understand the other person's point of view when conflict arises. Everyday I work with clients, account executives, copywriters, and web developers. This interaction has allowed me to improve my problem-solving and people skills because I deal with associates from all levels and backgrounds. In business, a good manager must be a creative thinker and must have people skills. Without creative thinking a company will be beaten by the competition. Also a company that is run by a manager lacking people skills will quickly lose its employees. The same is true for working on group projects. A group will fall apart without understanding one another and the being able to think outside the box. Creative thinking will help my group rise above and beyond group project requirements. I will also be able to use my creative thinking skills to solve problems within our group and on the project itself. Another qualification that makes me unique is my life experiences and my attitude towards life. I didn't have an ideal childhood. I started working at the age of fourteen and put myself through college. I paid for my sorority and my car. I had friends who drove brand new BMW's and had never worked a day in their life. I have never pitied myself. Today, I am so proud to say, "I did it all by myself. I earned it. I am truly a self-made woman." I whole-heartedly appreciate everything that I have because I worked hard for it. I don't take anything at face value. Being appreciative is a great trait for a person to possess. In class I will be appreciative of my classmates and what they have to offer. Effective managers are appreciative of their employees, clients, and associates. Being appreciative ensures the success of a business and all who play a part in the business. My parents have told me how special I was from my earliest memory. I have never had any reason to doubt it. I believe that my qualifications distinguish my candidacy and are represented throughout my entire application. I have full faith in myself and know I will be successful in the Terry MBA program and in any path life leads me.
