When I was elected President of the [deleted] Symphonic Choir, my biggest goal was to lead a summer tour. After all, the group had not been on a big trip in seven years. European tours were attempted for the past three summers, but none ever came to fruition. Everyone on the leadership team still wanted go there, myself included. We began to make initial preparations.

After some soul-searching, I realized that we were falling into the same old trap. The expense of flying across the Atlantic would be too great, and we would fail to attract enough participants. None of us had ever organized a tour, much less grappled with massive fundraising issues. It was simply too much to attempt at once. I guided the core leadership team through this re-evaluation, and they agreed. Europe might sound like fun, but it was too ambitious for our limited experience and resources. Instead, we chose to undertake a domestic tour exploring the northern United States.

Planning this trip equipped the incoming leadership with experience. Under my direction they learned to compile information press packets, map trip logistics, raise funds, and promote student interest. In short, they were prepared to arrange future tours, even ones to Europe. By re-evaluating unrealistic dreams, the team provided a cost-effective learning experience and laid the groundwork for future trips to succeed.
