Significant changes since 1997

University of Pittsburgh's EMBA Program is characterized by a dynamic interchange between the students and faculty, and a continuing dialogue on matters of content and structure is encouraged. Team leaders meet with the administrative and academic directors each term to discuss the program and courses. Together with significant input from the program faculty, this has created a pedagogical partnership, which works to keep the EMBA Program fresh, responsive, and innovative.

Among recent changes are: an expanded international trip; the informal integration of a domestic EMBA Program with the International EMBA (IEMBA) Programs when students in the IEMBA Programs are in residence on the School's U. S. campus; the creation of an Executive Briefing Program, which brings senior level executives from corporations with significant regional associations into the classroom as guests; the introduction of a new capstone computer simulation; and investment in enhanced presentation materials and technologies.

Special trips or projects outside of country
Mandatory

The school's International Study Trip is a two-week field study which combines visits to emerging and standing market economies and is integrated into the second year of study. Trade, market, and management practices are highlighted in discussions with local managers, government representatives, and academic experts. The destination, which differs each year, is chosen with input from the class and reflects a combination of their particular theoretical interests and the international expertise of the school's faculty. Recent destinations have included Brussels, Paris and Prague; Hong Kong and China; Brazil and Peru; and Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia.

Pittsburgh's FLEX-EMBA Program combines distance learning with classroom time. Distance learning is facilitated through software packages, facsimile, the Internet, and e-mail. Students study on rotation, the FLEX Program offering an integration of remote instruction and campus-only courses, all taught by the university's in-residence faculty. The program will soon be expanding to locations in Prague, Dublin, Sao Paulo and, in time, South Africa or Nigeria. Non-degree executive education programs are also available in distance learning classrooms.

Programs for the spouses of Executive MBA candidates

The school welcomes the participation of spouses in the International Study Trip.
