Significant changes since 1997

The school's curriculum is continuously updated to match contemporary issues and higher expectations from the business community. The choice of elective courses is also continually evolving. In any one year, as many as twenty courses may be offered as electives, from subjects such as Business Ethics, eCommerce, European Business Law, Taxation, Managing Change, Business Renewal, Management of Entreprenuerial and Small Business, Managing the Negotiation Process to Business Planning and Project Management.

An applied research project at the end of the program can include a multi-company project, an in-depth company case study, or a feasability study of a new business venture.

In March 1998 the school established a dedicated Careers Advisory Service, which matches the needs of multinational and international businesses to the graduates. A strong personal development program running through the MBA ensures that the students develop key skills in career planning and assessment, curriculum vitae and job search techniques, and in application form and interview preparation. The Mentor program ensures on-going contact between the students and leading business people.

New Technologies - used in the Schools MBA program:
The Technology Enhanced Lecture Room - sponsored and equipped by Telecom Eireann, the largest telecommunications firm in Ireland. The technology-enhanced lecture room will have multimedia facilities such as video projection, computer link-ups, and lecturer-controlled sound and lighting. Network connection pointed at each seat will permit students to attach their notebook computers, download and annotate course handouts, draw references from the Web to buttress their arguments and provide immediate feedback to the instructor. Software tools enabling electronic brainstorming, discussion and consensus building will be used to complement the face-to-face interaction in the classroom.

Videoconferencing allows students to partake in international discussions and presentations. For instance, last year, Dr Vinton Cerf, "the acknowledged Father of the Internet", spoke to the School via live videoconference link-up on the topic of "IT and Business - the Leaders Visions". The School also held an Evening Update for the MBA alumni on "The Emerging Myths and Realities of Ecommerce and their Implications for Business". Harvard Business Schools Professor John Sviokla, Dr Thornton May, vice-president of Cambridge Technology Partners and Malu Roldan of UCD Berkeley joined the update.

A new Business Case Competition this year will serve as an opportunity for the MBA students to demonstrate their analytical and problem solving skills, addressing a real business problem. It wil also present significant opportunity for interaction between students and the business community, as the Board of Assessors, or "Board of Directors" to whom the analysis and recommendations are presented comprise senior business executives who may have experience with the industry or with problems examined in the case.

Special trips or projects outside of country
Voluntary

There is a voluntary European Study trip for the school's International Executive MBA class. This is a participative trip, with the group visiting Brussels for one week. Here they are introduced to the workings of the European Commission, participate in case studies and meet up with the international business community based in Brussels. There is a project to complete at the end of the week. Courses on this study week abroad include "The European Business Environment," "The EU: An Historical and Political Review," "EU Structures and Instititions European Economic Policy," "European Careers and HRM Policies," "European Caital Markets," and "Financial Institutions and Practices in the New Europe". There is also a busy social agenda in the evenings with visits to traditional and international restaurants and sites.
