The school introduced a new competency based curriculum, including five new competencies identified as central to executive responsibilities. Such competencies include: The Economic Perspective; Human Resources and Organization Theory; Quantitative Decision-Making; Management in the Global Marketplace; and Policy and Planning.
Other additions include a required course in the area of leadership and one in the management of technology and innovation. Michigan State added forecasting and further international economics content to its macroeconomics course and a required financial strategy and supply chain course.

The International Business course explores the global scale of the current
business environment by examining economic, social, political, and cultural
factors associated with patterns of trade, investment, and production and
delivery of goods and services. An integral part of the International Business course is two-weeks of overseas study in an "economic region".
EMBA classes have visited Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, and many European countries. Senior executives at host sites discuss corporate strategy. Choice of host companies is based on reputation for excellence in areas such as marketing, client service, strategic planning, new product development or production.
