AAHA Veterinary Management Institute (VMI)

Type of course
General, tailored to AAHA members
Course length
Four 3-day modules conducted over a 2-year period
Class times
Thursday evening--Sunday afternoon
Description
When studying to become DVMs, veterinary students learn clinical skills within a tightly-packed curriculum that leaves little time for business management courses. However, DVMs soon become small business practitioners (buying into vet. practices), with no training in human resource issues, finance, marketing, and business strategy. Thru AAHA (American Animal Hospital Assn., which markets the program and handles registrations) and Purdue's Veterinary School, Purdue offers these respective areas in a multi-modular format, during weekends (minimizing time away from the practice), as continuing management education. AAHA's VMI starts its 10th series in 1999 (Nov. 11-14).

AMP has been fully funded through its first three years by the Sloan and National Science Foundations. Purdue's goal is to make the program self-supporting (partially thru distributed learning partnerships with other institutions) by its fourth year.
